Obituary of Eleanor Hofmann Bishop
Eleanor H. Bishop of Old Saybrook passed away peacefully at home on April 30 surrounded by her family. Born on November 11, 1923 in West New York, New Jersey Eleanor, or El as she was known to many, graduated from Memorial High School in 1941. She graduated in 1945 from the New Jersey College for Women which later became Douglass College and is a part of Rutgers University. She then pursued her master's degree in German at Middlebury College where she met her future husband, G. Randolph Bishop of Stony Creek, Ct .When her husband accepted a position at the Holderness School in Plymouth, New Hampshire, El accepted an offer to teach at a one-room schoolhouse nearby. From there the couple moved to Austin, Texas and Cleveland, Ohio before settling in Tenafly, New Jersey where they raised their family In Tenafly El was involved with many local activities such as the Junior League and the League of Women Voters. She also followed her twin passions of silversmithing and classical music. She volunteered with the New Jersey Symphony eventually rising to lead volunteer activities. El moved to Old Lyme in 1980 and became the General Manager of the Eastern Connecticut Symphony. Retiring in 1986 she moved to St Michaels in Maryland and other spots before returning to the area and settling in Old Saybrook in 1990.She is survived by her three children, two sons and a daughter, and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at St. Anne's Episcopal Church on Thursday, August 25 at 1:30.Interment will be private at Fairview Cemetery in Fairview, New Jersey.
