Obituary of Muriel A. Thompson

Muriel A. Thompson, 96, of Chester peacefully left this world on Tuesday October 30th, 2018. After 4 years apart, she has joined her husband of 71 years, Charles E. Thompson.

Muriel was born in Brooklyn, NY on July 17th, 1922, the only child of Carl Johnson and Clara Haecker. She attended Bucknell University, but with the declaration of WWII, left to marry Charlie, the love of her life. During the war she worked at Camp Shanks in NJ, the main point of troop embarkation on the East Coast. Primarily a wife (affectionately known as “honey-child”) and mother, she spent many years as a docent at the Wadsworth Atheneum and loved it beyond words. In 1976, Charlie and Muriel settled in Ivoryton on Mill Pond, spending winters in Vero Beach FL. They enjoyed boating and playing golf and their many friends, and spent their retirement travelling the world together. When the journeys became too difficult, they made their final move to Chester Village West where they thoroughly enjoyed the company of their new neighbors. Muriel read voraciously and Charlie completed only the most difficult puzzles he could find.

Muriel asked that the following Indian prayer be her parting sentiment:

When I am dead, cry for me a little.

Think of me sometimes, but not too much.

Think of me now and again,

as I was in life at some time that is pleasant to recall- but not too long.

Leave me in peace, and I shall leave you in peace.

And whilst you live, let your thoughts be with the living.

She leaves 3 children, Carl R. Thompson and his wife Jessica of Deep River, Susan T. Winchell and her husband Kim of Ivoryton, and Christine Thompson of Coventry, as well as 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Her family sends their appreciation to Lower Valley Care Advocates, Masonicare at Chester Village and particularly Doris McMillan from Lifetime Care at Home, who made the last year and a half of Muriel’s life safe, happy and comfortable.
