As recent as last night we had thought we might be able to make it today, but the morning light brought reason: we are not as young as we use to be, even for something as important as this. John has become an important part of the Fair Hill Therapeutic Riding Center, no matter where he is. We will always be grateful to his family for "raising" him and bringing him to us.

Dear family and friends of Jon,
I was so sorry to hear of Jon's passing. Me and my partner Toni met Jon last January while volunteering with him in Tobago. We started after him and he welcomed us into the little yellow house we shared straight away. He was one of the gentlest people I've ever met. He was kind to us, to the dogs that gathered in front of our house, to the horses, to the children that came to the centre and I expect to everyone he came across. He taught me and the other visitors from around the world a lot about horses - how they evolved, how they're vulnerable at their bellies, how their eyes look sideways so you must approach them from the side. He seemed a very modest man - we only learned of his impressive showjumping exploits from others and he brushed off any praise. I remember his dry sense of humour and his laidback warm energy - which suited Tobago perfectly. Me and Toni only knew Jon briefly but we shared a very happy time in our lives, we were very sad to hear of his passing and we will always remember him. Our sincere condolences to his loved ones.

So very sorry to find this. I was trying to find John to reconnect as it has been years since I have seen him. I rode with him in California and then went to Lyme to work for him and his father. He had a huge impact on me and was an amazing mentor. Condolences to his family.

I knew John when he was in Newport RI back in 1980. He was my riding instructor and one of the most beloved horse people I have ever met. He was kind, compassionate, funny, and so knowledgeable. I have known his mom for years and only recently realized that John was her son. I had so hoped to meet up with him after all of these years but sadly that won’t happen. My condolences to his family and friends, but most of all to Cate, his mom, who loved him so.

John was a loved member of the Cohen family for many years as Ethan’s partner. John was a gentle man , easy to adopt as a friend. Even after Ethan returned to city living and John remained in the country with his friends, horses and students, we stayed in touch. We loved that John was building his career as an Equine Therapist.
He would have been an amazing healer. He expressed happiness and confidence as he planned his career. It was just too short. Renée and Jonas Cohen

Many years ago when I lived in NYC, John facilitated my reconnection with horses through an early morning weekend lesson group he taught at Chelsea Piers. There was a core group of five fabulous women from all professions who came together every weekend to ride with John, and through him we all became friends. John had a lovely way with horses, and a fantastic teaching style which brought out the best in all of us. I was so sad to hear of John’s passing, and offer my deepest condolences to his family and friends.

The 8 years I had the privilege of being trained by John were and are some of the fondest and best memories I have in life so far. I always had this strange feeling that I was so so lucky to have found someone like John, and I always used to wonder how I would ever say goodbye to him, but I never considered what would happen if it were the other way around. Lessons with John were always so much more than just lessons. They were always the highlight of my week, my escape from a very intense, close-knit environment up here, and a breath of fresh air. They're one very big reason that I have been able to settle in so easily here, so far away from my home.
To go through everything that John gave me would be far too long for this message. But just to touch the surface... What John did for my riding and my confidence is so far beyond what I can even describe, other than to say, I am so far from the rider I was when I first met him. He pushed me to my lowest of lows, and my absolute highest of highs. He taught me what it actually feels like to have a horse come up underneath you and truly be on the bit and in the palm of your hands, and also what it feels like when they're not (which was a lot).
He picked me up off the ground not just literally, and helped me see the learning moment instead of the negative, frustration that I initially feel.
He taught me how to channel nerves and anxiety into actual feelings that I can work with and turn into something that can help the horse and myself be successful.
He helped me recognize where my fear comes from and how to turn it into something good.
He allowed me to sit back on Stormy when I just need a booster and a feel-good lesson, but he pushed me when he knew I need to be pushed.
He also gave me life advice, and were an ear that listened to me vent when I needed to.
Lessons with John were threaded in throughout the bigger picture of my life, and taught me so much more than just horsemanship skills, it was actually therapeutic. In most of my lessons he would weave in deeper concepts that I always was in awe of how he knew what was really going on in life - without me even telling him. It's like he was a mind reader (except I know he really just had such a special way with people), plus he had an eagle eye and can see things that I have no idea how he would notice. I could never get away with anything. And I am so thankful for that.
He made me want to be the best that I can be. But most of all, he gave me the thrill and happiness of riding that I think most people dream about.
For someone that I will forever look to and remember as a true mentor and an inspiration, I owe him so much gratitude and thanks for all he gave me. Words cannot even describe just how much I will miss John. It doesn’t feel real.
Sending best wishes and condolences to the family at this difficult time.
Emily Gorman, student with John: 2011 – 2017.
