I went to Valley and graduated in 78. I remember Mr. Sutherland as a great coach and an honorable man. I grew up at the Robinson and Wright Funeral home where my father was a mortician, Glen Scoboria. I see Mr. Sutherland exactly where he is honored in that room, and as he transitions to his rest, I send my sympathies.

Coach Sutherland is one of those rare people who landed in the absolute perfect role to make his mark on the world. He influenced every student who went through his gym class and even more to those who played ball for him. I have the best memories of Coach and admired him always. He has phrases I’ll never forget…… “Fifty” for 50 push-ups you had to do for making an ill-timed wise crack or mental error. And “ya hesitate, ya lost” which although not eloquent, is profound. So true in baseball on the base paths or deciding which base to go to on a force out; even truer in other parts of life. Don’t hesitate, doubt, worry – make a decision and go for it with all you’ve got.
To one of the most influential people I have met: Coach, Thank You and rest in peace.

Dear Ginny and Sean. I am so sadden to hear about the passing of Fred. I have many memories of Fred as a teacher and especially as a coach. I don't think there is a time when I am around the ball field or golf course, there isn't a thought of Fred. As a coach, he was very knowledgeable of the game, tough, understanding, and new what buttons to push to get the most out of ball players. Coaches like Fred are very hard to find today and it is a shame generations today will never have a opportunity to play for a coach like Fred. If I was to describe Fred in a few words it would be - Great Coach and a "Man's Man in Life"
Sorry for your loss

Hi Ginny and Sean,
I am sorry for your loss. Coach Sutherland “Fred” was one of my favorite people when I attended Valley Regional High School. I remember the first day of gym class as Coach Sutherland walked up and down the rows of boys in the gym looking us all over as he spoke loudly and quickly telling us what to expect that year. I thought to myself this is going to be a long hard year in gym. But, as time went on, I quickly realized he was a was a wonderful man who really cared about all of the students in the school. It didn’t matter if you were an accomplished athlete or someone with two left feet. He always had a kind word and was pleasant to all. My favorite memory of him was at the student awards ceremony at the end of my senior year. It was held in the school auditorium during the school day and the teachers gave out academic awards to their best students. Coach had given out the award for the best male and best female students in gym class for the year. But rather then stopping at that point he went on to mention the people he considered to be the athletic leaders of the school. As he called out the student names, he asked each one to stand up. He called out my name. That took me so much by surprise it took me a minute before I stood up. As small as that verbal mention seems it was a very happy moment for me and one that I never forgot. Over the past 44 years since I graduated, I have often thought of that day and how special he made me feel. I know throughout his career he touched the lives of many of his students and we are all better people for that. Coach Sutherland was a wise teacher, a great coach and just a very nice man I was fortunate to have met and a person I will never forget.

Please accept my condolences for the passing of Frederick. There is hope though, as the Almighty has arranged for the resurrection in the future. He promises, "... There is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous." (Acts 24:15)
I hope you find these few words comforting and provide motivation to prepare for the new world of God's making. (John 17:3)

My condolences to family for their loss. I remember Mr Sutherland as my gym teacher he had play some interesting and fun games. One was called kidnap there were two sides each side had to kidnap the other side whoever had leftover persons won the game.
He had a spiritual side to him and I hope the many good memories the family had will bring them comfort. The God of all comfort sees the tears brought on by the death of our loved ones Psalms 56:8. He yearns to bring back those sleeping in death Job 14:14,15 to a time when sickness, suffering and death will be no more. Revelation 21:4.

Fred was an impressive figure both physically and in demeanor and an excellent teacher.
Like & with Glenn & Murph, we all had a great deal of respect for Coach Sutherland while going through Valley Regional sports programs.
Aside from his tough guy façade we all knew he was good soulful guy. I am deeply saddened to hear his journey here has come to an end for his family's & friend's sake but it sounds like he should be well taken care of.

Fred and Ginny were my neighbors when I was growing up on Dennison Rd in Essex. When I got to High School and had him as a teacher, I thought he was bigger than life.....a dynamic personality that everyone respected and enjoyed......and yes....sometimes feared.
He was my baseball coach for a few years....there is nothing I wouldn't do for that man. I ran into him a few years ago at Valley Basketballs Championship game at Mohegan Sun......and he said again to me what he wrote in my Yearbook......" Murphy.....nice duy's can finish first.....you were always a nice guy.......how did you finish?
I was so happy then and now to tell Coach I was doing just fine.
Thank you for your direction....your discipline and your love.......you were a great coach and roll model......I will miss you. I will look for you on the "baseball diamond " on the other side.
Love
Murph
