Obituary of Robert Sterling Rayner

Robert Sterling Rayner, age 94 a lifelong resident of Chester passed away peacefully on Tuesday morning, September 10, 2019 at The Shoreline in Clinton. Bob was the beloved husband of Georgianna Rayner. She predeceased him on August 27, 2006. Bob was born in East Hartford the son of Charles and Charlotte (Young) Rayner. Bob was a veteran of World War II proudly serving his country in the United States Navy.  He was a supervisor at the C.J. Bates Company in Chester and retired after forty two years of service with the company.  Bob was a member of the United Church of Chester, the Industrial Management Club in New Haven and had been a very active member of The Fedhaven Fire Department in Fedhaven, Florida. He will be remembered as a craftsman who built hundreds of birdhouses and gave them away to others as homes for their backyard birds. Bob had a great love of birds and animals of all kinds. Bob loved to dress handsomely and would always wear something blue, his favorite color. He leaves his daughters, Sally Sizer and her husband Ronald of Westbrook, and Sandra Kiehm and her husband Robert of Higganum, his two granddaughters, Cynthia Torres and Kristen Sizer and his five great-grandchildren, Carlin Huckel, Deryk Artioli, Devin Harris, Isa Torres and Ayda Bhargava. Bob also leaves his brother Charles Rayner of Deep River. Besides his beloved wife Georgianna he was predeceased by his brothers, Beryl and Bruce Rayner. Bob’s funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 17, 2019 at 2:00PM in the chapel of the Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main Street in Centerbrook. The Reverend Alan W. Froggatt will officiate. Burial with the rendering of Full Military Honors will follow in the Fountain Hill Cemetery in Deep River. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in his name to VNA Community Healthcare, 753 Boston Post Road, Suite 200, Guilford, CT 06437 or to The United Church of Chester, 29 West Main Street, Chester, CT 06412.
