Obituary of Michael J. Houlihan

On Monday, December 16th, 2019, Michael J. Houlihan of Old Lyme, loving husband and father of three children, passed away peacefully at his home. Michael was born in the Bronx on March 21, 1935 to Patrick and Katherine (McKenna) Houlihan. He lived in the Bronx and then Jamaica, NY until his marriage to Mary Elizabeth Scott in 1964. They bought their first home in Bayville, NY overlooking Oyster Bay, and then moved to Chappaqua, NY where they raised their 3 children. They returned to living near the water when they moved to Block Island, RI where they owned a small gift shop and finally to Old Lyme, CT. Michael leaves behind his wife Mary of 55 years; a son, Scott Houlihan and his wife Roxanna of Easton, CT and their children Ian and Connor; a daughter, Jeanmarie Houlihan-Grubbs and her husband Christopher of Morristown, NJ and their children Garrett and Matthew; and a son Dr. Patrick Houlihan and his wife Sydney of Edgewater, NJ; a sister, Anne O’Connor of Jupiter, Fl; a brother, John Houlihan of Greenwood Lake, NY; a brother, Thomas Houlihan of Charlottesville, VA; and a predeceased sister, Theresa White. Michael was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved being with his family, and enjoyed the company of his many nieces and nephews. In his early adulthood Michael enlisted during the Korean War and achieved the rank of Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps while serving from 1953 to 1956. After serving in the military he graduated from Queens College, and later built and co-owned a successful insurance business for 30+ years. Michael was an avid newspaper reader who enjoyed doing crossword puzzles every day where his love of the English language was put to use. He will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him. A visitation will be held from 1:00 PM-4:00 PM on Saturday, December 21st at the Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main Street in Centerbrook, CT.
