Obituary of Elspeth J.M. Woodward
On 21st of March, 2020, Elspeth Jesse McKenzie Woodward (Brown), loving wife and mother of four children, passed away at age 94. Elspeth was born on December 4, 1925 in Galashiels, Scotland to Andrew and Elspeth (Muir) Brown. She received her teaching degree from the University of Edinburgh in Edinburgh, Scotland. On August 7, 1952, she married Charles Woodward and in 1956 they moved to the United States where they raised two sons, Graham and Neil, and two daughters, Caroline and Susan. Elspeth had a passion for gardening and later in life for painting. She also loved to spend her summers at their cottage on the coast of Maine. Elspeth was passionate about many causes. She volunteered time at a thrift shop for Planned Parenthood and supported many environmental and social causes. She believed “Nothing that is worth doing can be achieved in our lifetime; therefore we must be saved by hope.” (Reinhold Niebuhr). Elspeth was preceded in death by her father, Andrew, her mother, Elspeth, and her brother Colin. She is survived by her husband Charles, her four children, Graham (Karen), Neil (Marybeth), Caroline (David) and Susan (Bob), her grandchildren John, Katie, Andy, Sarah, Lora, Alan, Emily, McKenzie, Colin, and Jade and nine great grandchildren. The Woodward Family wishes to thank the Essex Meadows staff for their wonderful care. A memorial service may be held in the future. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Planned Parenthood, or Essex Meadows Employee Appreciation Fund. Arrangements are by the Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home in Centerbrook.
