Obituary of Barry J. Fulford

Barry Fulford died in Yale New Haven Hospital on May 27 from cardiac problems. He is mourned by his relatives in England including his sister Pamela, his nieces Judith and Elizabeth and their families; and by his many friends in the US. Barry was born and grew up in North London and was educated in local schools. He loved soccer and cricket. As a teenager he organized a schoolboy cricket team which challenged and acquitted itself well against various men’s clubs. After school he did his 3 years of military service in the Royal Signals with a regiment stationed in Germany. He started his business career marketing bibles with the Oxford Press - a role he later recounted with a wry grin. He later took up a management trainee opportunity with the Cadbury company, rising rapidly through the marketing ranks. In 1960 they selected him to open up their business in the US. He served for a period as President of Cadbury’s subsidiary here, before moving on to other duties in the chocolate and confectionary industry. His final career was In real estate, working with the prestigious Greenwich firm of David Ogilvy and Associates. He had some good stories to tell of his experiences there. Upon retirement in 1998 Barry moved to Essex and quickly entered into the life of the town. At various times he was on the Board of the Historical Society and on committees of the Library where he also funded a range of books. He served for several years as President of FISH, the medical drivers service. He was affable, generous, often witty and occasionally controversial. He loved spirited conversations with his friends in the village coffee shops.Yet he valued his privacy and independence and insisted on living in his own house even during his declining months. As he directed, there was no funeral but there will be a gathering to celebrate his life later in the year when virus circumstances permit.
