We are so sorry to hear of the passing of John. We have been neighbors to John and Eileen for the last 25 years. They were always so happy when my girls would come by selling Girl Scout cookies when we were fairly new to the neighborhood. We will miss the occasional waves to John traveling in and out of the neighborhood. John certainly has left his mark in Old Saybrook. He will be missed as is his wife Eileen. Our condolences to his family.

How lucky we feel to have had a friend that makes saying goodbye so hard. We know that you are filling the sky with music and laughter just as you did here.

I feel like I have lost a family member. Mr, Torrenti was a close friend and important influence to the Ranelli’s of Old Saybrook. Not only was he my father's high school band director, musical mentor and personal friend, he even served as his best man! Whenever we'd visit Old Saybrook, my parents would bring me to John and Eileen’s, where he would invite me to play his beautiful Steinway. Just last year, I was fortunate enough to bring my own two daughters to meet Mr. Torrenti - and perform for him on his Steinway! He seemed quite pleased, which meant a great deal to me coming from a such a discerning musician who had an impact on so many. My deepest condolences to the Torrenti family.

John was a classmate of mine and we shared a love for music. He was serious in nature but also had a humorous side and enjoyed poking fun on occasion. We played in the school band and I always appreciated his comments. He was a great classmate and always enjoyed talking to him the few times I ran into him over the years. Since I moved away from Saybrook in 1958 and did not make it home that often, it was a rare occasion when I saw him but will remember him fondly. Nancy Hess Lawshe

Mr. Torrenti was my band teacher from 86 to 90 and I am so happy that he was. He will always have a special place in my heart as he took extra time out of his day for me so that I could be a better musician. He will forever live in my heart and I send many prayers to your family.

Sharon Grace Baldi posted a condolence

Sharon and Richard,
I was very sorry to hear of John's passing. We will all miss him at church. I remember a brief conversation my mom had with John a month or so before she passed. As we walked out of 5 pm mass, John went over and hugged her after closing the piano. She said, "John, God has blessed you with such a gift, to be able to play the piano like you do, I think the angels move your fingers."
I thought he was going to cry.
I know he is with his true love and that is comforting to know. Bet you the Torrenti's and Baldi's are all up there together having a nice Italian dinner.
