Obituary of Norman G. Root, Sr.

Norman G. Root Sr. 75, passed away on November 30, 2020. He was born in Middletown, Connecticut on December 17, 1944 to Harry Root and Lena Mae Gesick Root. Norman was a commercial fisherman who fished the Connecticut River and the Long Island Sound. Every Spring until his retirement he could be found on the river fishing for shad. Up until this past summer he still enjoyed fishing recreationally. He was mechanically inclined and will be remembered for being able to fix anything. In more recent years he enjoyed frequenting the casinos and loved to play blackjack. For the past 25 years he loved being a grandfather and was full of pride when speaking of his grandchildren who knew him simply as “Pop”. He was an amazing grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 51 years Camille and his children Renee Root Shippee, Norman G. Root Jr. and his wife Jackie, Christopher M. Root Sr. and his wife Dana and grandchildren Kelsey Root Maynard and her husband Tom, Christopher M. Root Jr., Chloe Root, Trevor Root, Norman G. Root III, Alexie Root, and Kasey Root. Norman is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws. He is predeceased by his parents Harry Root and Lena Mae Gesick Root, siblings Harry Root, Agnes Root Fredrickson, Lawrence Root, Bette Root Simoni, and Dorothy Root Staplins, and son-in-law Oscar Shippee. He was truly loved and will be missed by many. The lives of those who knew him will forever be a little more empty. He leaves one of the biggest voids with his seven grandkids or seven Brats as he lovingly referred to them. Pop never missed a chance to take a ride with any of them, even if it meant he was spending $60 at a candy store or picking them up from school. He leaves them his love for the water, his bouncing leg, and of course many happy memories. There will be a Celebration of Life at a future date when it is safe to do so. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Norman’s name to Saint Jude Children’s Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Way, Memphis, TN 38105.
