We first met Al Malpa some 40 years ago, when he helped us out with the financing arrangements on selling our old house as well as buying our new home where we still live today. He went well beyond the normal level of customer support to make it happen for us. We are forever grateful to him for getting us off to a good start as a young married couple, and both his competence and good humor throughout that stressful situation was even more valuable. Our most sincere sympathies go out to Al's family. He was a wonderful, kind and caring man. John and Carole Donagher

I was so shocked to see Al's obituary in the Valley Courier just now. He was such a nice man. I only met him around the town a couple of times. Once he came into my vintage shop and we talked a long time about his Ephemera passion. He impressed me as being kind and sincere. Sending heartfelt condolences to Cary and the rest of the family. Regards, Karen Hart

Cary, I am so shocked and saddened to read about Al. I did have the pleasure of meeting him once, and you could tell he was a happy person, curious and engaged in life; I will never know why the best people have to leave us. My thoughts are very much with you.

My sincerest sympathy and prayers are with all of Al's family and many friends. Whoever created his obituary nailed it, as I remember Al as a kind, talented, gentle soul. I had the pleasure of getting to know Al about 15 years ago in Farmington Rotary. It was because of Al that I started volunteering at the Loaves & Fishes Soup Kitchen in Hartford. Al headed that volunteer mission within our Rotary Club, and he did it with incredible passion. I remember that Liz helped him as well, as volunteers were tough to recruit at times within the club. I was honored when Al asked me to take over Loaves & Fishes when a project he was working on forced him to leave our club. I sought out Al's council on occasion, and when I needed his expertise regarding an issue with a property I was trying to buy, he refused to take a payment for his property evaluation. He at least let me buy him lunch, during which he told me many incredible stories of his past. I told Al that I prayed for him before I ever knew him, referring to the incident at his office. I will pray for him once again! God bless this kind soul, and all his loved ones.
