Obituary of George H. Winter, Jr.

George H. Winter Jr. -- Loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, died on Saturday, June 19, at Middlesex Hospital. He was 69. George was born on June 5, 1952, to George H. and Norma Winter Sr. and grew up Maple Street in Saugus MA. He was proud to attend Groton School in Groton, MA, from 1964-1970, where he flourished and developed some of his closest relationships with classmates, whom he considered his brothers. He was extremely appreciative of the education he received at Groton, and had great respect for his professor and mentors. George went on to continue developing his artistic and creative skills at Brandeis University, in Waltham MA, where he graduated with a Bachelor's degree of fine arts in 1974. He married his wife Patty in 1977 in Norwalk, CT, and they moved to Old Saybrook for a short time before Patty and George settled in Chester, CT, in 1980. He enjoyed calling Chester his home, and was proud of the life he built here - raising his daughter Maggie, coaching her little league teams, spending days at Cedar Lake with the family, summers on Block Island, and cruising around in his sporty mini cooper. George was hardly ever seen without one of his MANY Red Sox hats and t-shirts. To say he has a 'small collection' would be an understatement. He was a die-hard fan, and everyone knew better than to interfere with game time. His humor, wit, and snappy comebacks are what we will remember him most for. Whether it was during a game of cribbage, kismet, or cornhole, he was always there to keep us laughing and smiling endlessly. George had recently retired from Cigna Corporation, working in their creative services department as Marketing Senior Associate, Proofreader/Editor. Creativity came through in every aspect of his life, and for those who knew George well, you know how he fully embodied the title of 'Grammar Police.' If you missed punctuation or misspelled a word, he would be the first one to let you know. During his last 2 years, he found great pride and joy in loving, caring for, and helping to raise his most precious granddaughter Maeve 3 days a week. A proud, devoted and loving family man, George is survived by his wife Patty, of almost 44years of marriage, beloved daughter Maggie Winter Damato, son-in-law Derek Damato, granddaughter Maeve Winter Damato (of Rocky Hill, CT), Sister Lydia Winter (VT),Brother-in-law James Marron (CT), Sisters-in-law, Jane Marron (CT) and Eileen Marron (IL),many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whom he loved dearly. George was predeceased by his parents and his brother Neal Winter. He was a man of great faith and spirituality, in death, he embraced the journey to his next life. Visitation will be held Thursday, June 24 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at the Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main Street in Centerbrook. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am on Friday June 25 at St. Joseph's Church, 48 Middlesex Avenue in Chester, followed by interment at St. Joseph's Cemetery.
