Obituary of Margaret Ann Dorrance

Margaret Ann Dorrance “Maggie” of Stamford, CT, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2021, her 69th birthday, after a brief illness. She was surrounded by members of her family. Maggie spent her final 2 weeks at the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Chantal and Bruce Lawrence, in Westbrook, CT. Born in Bombay, India June 18, 1952, of parents Nathaniel R Dorrance "Pete" and Marguerite Ann Peoples “Peggy” (both deceased), Maggie was the 2nd of 5 children. Her family followed their father whose career as an oil executive took them around the world, residing in Bombay, Calcutta, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Singapore, Brussels, and finally Greenwich (Riverside), CT. An exceptional athlete, Maggie was known for her prowess in field hockey and softball, even starring on a women’s adult team as a 10-year-old in Singapore. As an adult she enjoyed playing softball in local leagues and golf. Maggie attended Greenwich High School and the University of Bridgeport where she discovered her passion for nursing. She went on to acquire a nursing degree from Norwalk Community College. Maggie spent her entire nursing career of 48 years at Greenwich Hospital, first as a candy striper while attending Greenwich High School, and a unit secretary and nursing assistant while pursuing her degree. Later she became a gifted, beloved Head Nurse of the Orthopedic/Neurological unit and then a Case Manager of the surgical unit “where she brought a wealth of information and knowledge in planning the best course for the patients she served”. Maggie is survived by her siblings Anson (M’Liss), Pete (Dolly), Lewjack (Linda), Chantal (Bruce), 2 nieces, 1 nephew, a step nephew, 3 grandnephews, her mother’s sister Helen Peoples Buty, and many cousins. Maggie is remembered for her compassion, generosity, competitive fire in all games and her rapier wit. Maggie was beloved by all she met and served. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date for close friends and family. Arrangements made by Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main St, Centerbrook, CT, 06409.
