He was born in Manchester, CT to the late Stewart Atkinson and Louisa (Schendel) Atkinson. He was predeceased by his brother, Dr. Stewart Atkinson and sister, Francis MacDonald. He leaves the love of his life, LaVerne, who he married on October 29, 1966 in Clinton, CT. They celebrated each of those 54 years with a trip to P’town on Cape Cod. He also leaves his daughter, Laurel Morrissette & her husband, Phil of Manchester, a grandson, Paul & his wife, Renee of Manchester, a granddaughter, Denise, and a great grandson, Patrick. Also his sister-in-law Jane Atkinson in Florida. He enlisted in the United States Navy in March 1943 during World War II. He served in the Mediterranean, Adriatic Sea, and Battle of Normandy as a member of the “Armed Guard”. He was assigned as a Gunner’s Mate on the USS Lucy Stone battleship. He received his Honorable Discharge on December 12, 1945 as a Seaman First Class. Bill was hired January 18, 1959 as a professional firefighter for the South Manchester Fire Dept. Subsequently renamed the Town of Manchester Fire Dept. He spent his entire FD career assigned to Engine Company 3, and retired on October 1, 1986, when he and his wife, LaVerne, moved from Manchester to the Connecticut Shore in Clinton. He was a 70-year Mason at Jeptha Lodge #95 in Clinton. In later years he did not attend meetings, but was always proud to be a member. Bill had many friends and enjoyed each day. He loved working outside using his collection of tractors which now total seven…each with a specific use. Per Bill’s request there will be no service or calling hours. A private graveside service was held Saturday, July 17th, 2021 for the family.
