We are very sorry to hear of Bob's death, but very happy to remember all the wonderful times we shared with Bob and Midge on Ridgecrest West in Scarsdale, New York.
We were recruited by Bob to the neighborhood. He and I (John) played on the paddle team at Scarsdale Golf Club. Bob was 20 to 25 years years older than his team-mates, but the opposing club's players never realized it. Bob was a superb player.
We spent many happy hours together on the paddle courts, and then one day in early 1980, after a match in Larchmont, Bob said "the house next door to us is about to go on the market, and the owner would like to sell it to a nice young couple like Bonnie and you." We expressed interest and Bob and Midge promptly had us to their home for cocktails and to meet the nice lady looking to sell her house.
We bought the house shortly thereafter, and we were delighted to be neighbors of Bob and Midge from April 1980 until they moved to Essex Meadows in 1996. They called us "the kids next door" and they included us in many gatherings at their home - - sometimes just the four of us and always at their joyous "Derby Day" parties.
We still live in the house to which we are proud to say "we were recruited by the Gillies."
We deeply regret that we have a long-standing commitment on February 28 which will prevent us from attending the memorial service. Bruce and Polly, and Brian and Sue, please know we will be there in spirit and that we send our deepest condolences.
