Obituary of Sherwood "Woody" Harvey
It is with great sadness that we share that Sherwood (Woody) Harvey, age 93, of Old Saybrook passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 19th, 2021. Born in Jamestown, NY on May 18, 1928 he was the seventh child of the late Walter A. and Kate (Hale) Harvey and is survived by his 101 year-old sister, Ellen Newman of Greenhurst, NY. He is also survived by his loving wife of almost 60 years, Barbara (Spencer) Harvey and two sons, Alan Spencer Harvey of Irvine, CA and Michael Walter Harvey and his spouse Jeanmarie (Whitcomb) of Old Saybrook, CT. He is predeceased by his daughter, Debra Damarodis of Susquehanna, PA. He also leaves behind two grandchildren, Lydia Marie Harvey and Spencer Alexander Harvey.
Woody graduated from Bemus Point High School in 1946 where he exceled at multiple sports. After high school he enlisted in the armed services and was stationed in Germany where he played both baseball and football for the Army. A resident of Chicago, IL for many years he eventually met Barbara and moved to Old Saybrook where he built a successful heating and air conditioning business. He shared his passion for sports by serving as a director of the Old Saybrook Park and Recreation Department and coaching youth soccer and baseball teams. He continued to play baseball himself into his late 60s with local teams and also with the Jamestown Old Timers where he was the pitcher and his eldest brother Oscar was the catcher. A highlight of his baseball “career” was pitching a game at the field located at the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY. He loved traditional jazz, hunting, fishing, scalloping, crabbing and traveling. Some of his favorite memories were fishing and picnicking with his grandchildren. In his later years he volunteered for the New England Air Museum using his metal working skills to restore vintage airplanes. One of his largest projects was the restoration of the A26 Invader “Reida Rae”. He was a member of several local organizations including the Westbrook Elks Lodge 1784 and the American Legion Post 113.
His family will receive friends for calling hours on Thursday, August 26, 2021 from 5-7 pm at the Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home located at 34 Main Street in Centerbrook.
