Obituary of Elton F. Deckelman
Elton Deckelman, 91 of Centerbrook passed away Tuesday, February 10, 2015 with his wife Dorothy by his side. He leaves his wife Dorothy, daughter Pamela, son Paul, grandchildren, Paul Jr., Brooke, and Mark, cousin Helen Koch, of Ivoryton, sister- in -law, Martha Deckelman of Deep River, niece and goddaughter, Ann Marie Tremblay and husband Gerald Tremblay of Wilmington, NC., sister- in- law Lynda Shaw and Rick Shaw of Chesapeake, VA, sister-in-law Mary Mason and Virgil Mason of Palm Bay, FL, and nieces, Faith Winstead and Sarah Kennedy. He proudly served three years in the U.S. 8th Air Force and was attached to the 448th Bomb Group stationed at Seething, UK, next to Gt. Yarmouth and the English Channel. He was awarded two Meritorious Achievement Awards, Good Conduct Metal, 448th Unit Badge, WWII Victory Medal, the European Theatre Ribbon and the Presidential Citation. After his honorable discharge in November 1945, he entered the U.S. Postal Service in Old Saybrook. He was promoted to Assistant Postmaster and served in that position for fifteen years and than was promoted to Postmaster of Old Saybrook where he served for thirteen years until his retirement in 1978. He was then appointed to Deputy Sheriff, State of Connecticut until he resigned to move to his Florida winter home. He was a charter member of the Old Saybrook Exchange Club, a life time member of the American Legion Post #113 with over 60 years of active service, a member of the National Association of Postmasters, the Connecticut Association of Postmasters Retired, and a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Essex and served as an usher there for many years. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Our Lady of Sorrows Church followed by private burial with the Rendering of Full Military Honors at Saint Joseph Cemetery in Chester.
