Obituary of John C. Newsome Jr.

John C. Newsome, Jr., of Essex CT, unexpectedly passed away from heart failure early Friday morning, November 5, 2021. He was 90 years old at the time of his death. John was born on January 17, 1931 and, along with his wife Carol, had been living in Essex, CT since 2016. John had a long and varied professional life, ending his working career as owner of Spectrum Business Exchange in Union, NJ. He was born in New York City and grew up in Glen Cove, Long Island, NY with his parents, John and Eleanor Newsome, and his sister, Anne Davis, of La Jolla, CA. He attended the Hill School in Pottstown, PA and later went on to Yale University in New Haven, CT, graduating in 1954. John married his first wife, Jennifer L. Newsome in 1956, and moved to South Orleans in Cape Cod, MA in 1990. They had three children, Laura, Doug, and Chad. Jennifer passed away in November of 1995 and John later met his second wife, Carol, of Poland, ME and they subsequently married in December of 1998. John and Carol lived together in both Cape Cod and Maine until moving to Essex. John was known for his calm, pleasant, and engaged demeanor. He maintained a love of learning throughout his entire life. Chick Treadway, his roommate from Yale, remained his best friend for 70 years. He was happiest with the love of his life, Carol. They traveled extensively around the world. John was a proud and supportive father for his children and grandchildren. Additionally, he was so happy with the expansion of his family when he and Carol married, gaining not only a wife, but also her two sons, Nate and Curt, and their respective families. He was always willing to share his excitement about his entire family with anyone within earshot. John maintained a life of engagement with various organizations such as The Hill School, Yale University, Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra, the Orleans Historical Society, and the Snow (Orleans) Library. John is survived by his wife, Carol; his sister, Anne Davis; his daughter, Laura Thiel (Russell) and their children, Stephen (Lauren) and Alex; his son, Doug Newsome (Christiane), and his children, Jack, Andrew, Bailey, and Tyler; his son, Chad Newsome (Carrie) and their children, Abby, Ryan, and Kate; Carol’s son, Nate Smith and his children, Allie (Natalie), Emily (Dan), and Jake; Carol’s son, Curt Smith (Justine) and their children, Jocelyn and Tyler.
