Obituary of Sheila J. Velsmid
Sheila J. Velsmid, 95, a longtime resident of Westbrook, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 15th, surrounded by family and her devoted aide Andree.
Predeceased by her husband, Stephen Velsmid, Sr. and her son, Stephen Jr., Sheila is survived by her sister Moira McKay and three daughters, Esther, Stephanie and Janet, along with Stephanie’s partner Kaaren. She is also survived by her grandchildren, John and Tina Marie and her great granddaughter Ashley.
A conscientious employee, Sheila valued her work in accounting and retired from Unilever after many years.
A faithful, loving and courageous woman, Sheila faced multiple health challenges with bravery, determination and humor. She was called “The Comeback Kid” by her longtime friend and physical therapist Sally Huysman.
Sheila was an enthusiastic traveler who visited Scotland, Ireland, Canada, Australia, Bermuda, Hong Kong and the Vatican. She was fond of sightseeing, shopping and bargain hunting. Sheila took every opportunity to enjoy tea and a pastry along the way.
A talented baker, Sheila made countless “goodies”, including delightful cakes, cookies and Scottish shortbreads. Swimming, bowling, walking and tennis were among her favorite sports.
Sheila was a devout Catholic and member of Saint Mark the Evangelist Church who prayed the rosary each night. She cherished her family and friends and leaves a legacy of fond memories.
A Mass will be held for Sheila at St. John’s Church, 161 Main St, Old Saybrook, CT 06475, on Wednesday, October 19, at 10:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, charitable donations may be made to the Dominican Nuns of Our Lady of Grace Monastery in North Guilford, CT or The Shoreline Soup Kitchens and Pantries.
