When we moved to New London many years ago a friend recommended we try Cliff’s, “the best butcher in the state.” When we entered that first time, Cliff Ward made us feel more than welcome, he treated us like people he had known for years. We quickly made it our routine to drive once a week to stock up and talk with Cliff, who was always warm and friendly, taking the time to tell us stories and jokes, and talk of our shared appreciation for Connecticut, volunteer fire departments, and meat. Because of Cliff and his shop, we decided to move to the area so we could stop in more often—a decision we have always celebrated. We are bereft that Cliff is gone and extend our deep condolences to his family. Our community lost a local hero and a fine man who lives on in our memories and hearts. Michael and Nina

I went to high school with Cliff. He and his wife, Sandy, were part of us young couples with children back in the 70's. There was always a picnic, party and many other gatherings. I've been a customer of his store from time-to-time. He was excellent in his business and a darned good butcher!!! Prayers to Scott, Kathy and the rest of his family. Karen Cole Pompea

Scott, God Bless you and your family during this difficult and sad time. We will miss your dad. Cliff was a good and honorable man who will be missed by our community. It was a pleasure being next door neighbors in business these past almost 20 years. He was a real friend to Porky Petes and to Pete and I. Selene & Peter Sweck

Rest in peace my friend you have been and will be truely missed. I met Cliff in 82 when I bought the house ACROSSED from Cliff. I had a son who seemed to get sick every winter to where we would have to call for the ambulance and every single time Cliff would come running across the street to help. Cliff I'm going to miss sitting out front together. Thank you for all you have shared with us all. Kathy and Scott my heart go's out to you both and if there's anything you guys need you know where I live. P.s I loved your dad as a true friend

When we moved to 96 Main St. Ivoryton Cliff’s store was our go to place for everything as we could walk there. He was always friendly and happy to see us! On the night of the flood when the water was rising to our patio, Cliff showed up with some other firemen to try to rescue some one holding on to a tree as the flood waters rushed by. Cliff always had our back and we loved him for it. And our daughter Sam loved walking over to the store all by herself for candy and soda!
