I was so very sorry to hear of Elaines passing. My computer had been broken so I just read it today. So sorry I missed the wake. She was a roommate of my sisters at Chestelm and I remember having wonderful chats and laughs with her. She was one of a kind! Condolences to all her family. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Firstly, Rob and Laurie, you are in my heart and in my prayers; however, let me assure you that there are those of us who have nothing but the sweetest of memories and sincere gratitude for the kindness and hospitality that was always felt at your home. I can never describe succinctly what it was like growing up with your family next door; where and how do I begin? However, there is one thing I can say without hesitation and concisely - I just liked being there. I always felt comfortable (maybe too much sometimes), I was never re-buffed (probably should have been) and never felt unwanted. How blessed a little girl I was: I had the very best playmate in the world within walking distance and I was welcome into his home the entire neighborhood troop was welcome in his home. Your mother's talents in the kitchen did not go unnoticed; as I started with my own family and individual traditions (baking Christmas cookies to be specific) I was in awe of your mother's delightful confections. I did NOT find it so effortless or as creative. I still marvel - how did she do it?! It is evident that it is clearly a talent,
Over time I have tried to explain this period of time in my life to people and each with each attempt it grows more and more precious in my heart. After going round and round (like I said I have never been concise) I summarize with they were and are just good people. I would not call myself a devout Christian (singing in a church choir does NOT qualify) but one description I would have to use for both your parents is they were the closest to my definition of practicing Christians as I have ever known. They did not preach the Golden Rule, they lived it and without any pretense. I learned more than I ever realized and like I said, it grows more and more precious with time. I think I am just going to have to give up being concise; I am going to continue to explain my youth with all the affection, fondness and love it deserves.

The Smith house was the "house of hospitality", an "open house" to all. You could count on robust greetings and friendly smiles from Phil and Elaine. You were encouraged to enter and take a seat---anywhere. It was a house of laughter and warmth and great light-hearted conversation. I remember enjoying a cup of coffee with Elaine at the yellow kitchen table. She was an engaging conversationalist and personality. She genuinely liked people, little people----and dogs( Heidi and Scamp) and ponies( Russet and Princess) and a lone red Rhode Island Red hen, named Henrietta. More importantly, she was a great mom and a devoted wife. She was a strong and vital woman, who enjoyed reading western novels and watching westerns on television. Imagine, westerns over romance novels! She was one of the radical women of the 60s! I can distinctly remember her rapt attention in watching "The Bravados" and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance". . I ask you, how cool is that! She was a very special kind of woman. She was the hostess of the house, my David thought of his second home. It was a comfortable and comforting house to him--thank you, Phil and Elaine. Elaine, you were always a commanding presence, and an enduring memory.

A visit with Mrs. Smith was always a highlight of any trip south to Barbara's home state. You felt a sense of compassion and caring from this lovely woman in every conversation. Mrs. Smith's cards were always looked forward to in the mail - I am so pleased to to have known her. Mrs. Smith was an very important figure in my wife Barbara's (Gesick) life growing up in Killingworth on the Roast Meat Hill Road. Mrs.Elaine Smith will be missed by the Haskell family.

Elaine, our Killingworth neighbor, was always "Mrs. Smith" to me even when I last visited with her in August 2014. She was a dear kind-hearted lady with a great sense of humor. No one,I learned, got between her and her bingo at Chestelm!
