Obituary of Irving Joseph Chmura
Irving Joseph Chmura, 85, of East Haddam, passed away on Friday, October 30, 2015. Born in Sterling, he was the son of the late Louis and Victoria (Budnik) Chmura. Irving graduated from Plainfield HS in 1948 and attended UConn School of Engineering for two years. He began his career as a designer for Electric Boat before being drafted into the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Electric Boat, where he worked for 44 years. Irving was a talented craftsman, an avid gardener, and also devoted much of his time to the East Haddam Historical Society and the First Church of Christ Congregational Cemetery. Irving was predeceased by his high school sweetheart and beloved wife of 54 years, Vivian (Barry) Chmura, as well as three brothers, Frederick, Theodore, and Edmond Chmura. He is survived by four loving daughters; Martha (Sr. Mary Lucy,O.P.) of Buffalo, NY, Amy Hopkins and her husband Paul of Glastonbury, Sarah Lewis of East Haddam, and Jessica Chmura of Centerbrook. Irving also leaves three grandchildren; Allison and Nathan Kiley and Olivia Negron, all of East Haddam, as well as his brothers, Arthur Chmura of Moosup and Longen Chmura of Groton, many nieces and nephews, and his dear friends and neighbors. Visitation will be held on Tuesday November 3rd from 5-7PM at Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main Street, Centerbrook. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Saint Joseph's Church, Chester on Wednesday November 4th at 10:30AM. Interment will follow at the Congregational Church Cemetery in East Haddam.
