Obituary of Robert Garbe
Robert "Bob" Garbe passed away on November 3, 2015, at The Connecticut Hospice in Branford. Our father was born on February 28, 1927, to Carl and Rachael Garbe in Pittsburgh. After graduating from Peabody High School he attended the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y., and was assigned to Grace Lines Shipping in San Francisco. He returned to Pittsburgh after his discharge and married his high school sweetheart, Diane Snodgrass. Bob attended the University of Pittsburgh, earning a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering. He obtained an engineering position in Westinghouse's atomic power division, becoming one of the first quality assurance engineers in the early stages of the commercial nuclear power generation industry. Bob moved his family to Old Saybrook, CT., in 1965, working for Electric Boat, a division of General Dynamics, then for Northeast Utilities at the Millstone Nuclear Power Station during the construction of units 1 and 2. Becoming disenchanted with the nuclear industry, he transferred into NU's alternative energy department. He retired in 1994. Bob was predeceased by his brother Carl Jr., his sister Betty, and his daughter Christy. He is survived by his wife, Diane, of Old Saybrook, sons, Robert Jr. of Navarre, Fla., and Carl of Old Saybrook, and daughter Sharon of New York City and Guilford, CT. A memorial service is planned for the near future.
