Just learned of his passing 9-28-19: I was his lector and attended about 10,950 of his Masses. If I wanted the straight truth I could always depend upon him to give it to me unvarnished. He knew the way to God and those who followed him would certainly have know it too. I'm glad to have known and served with him from 1985 to 2015. God bless all those relatives and friends of his.

I worked with Fr. Ahern for over 14 years. He became more of a family member to me than an employer or a friend.
My daughter Katie was "raised" in the Rectory. We have many fond memories of Father Ahern.
Never a birthday nor holiday would go by without a card from him.
Katie & I will miss him more than words can say. He was one in a million and taught us the true meaning of being a Christian.
Cheri-Lyn my oldest daughter was the first teenager to say the readings at St Joseph's. She was the one who told father to hire me, I would take great care of him & the rectory. God Does Bless this Man.
We feel a loss along with Sister Denise. Through Father Denise,Katie & I became true friends.

Father Ahern officiated at our wedding on November 26, 1960 at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Church in New London, Connecticut. He conducted a beautiful ceremony, and we always remember his kindness and expertise on our special day.
We are keeping Father Ahern in our prayers and ask God to grant him an eternity of peace and happiness, and may Our Lord comfort and console Father's family members in their very personal loss.
Sincerely,
Roberta & Joseph Lombardino

I knew Father Ahern well from the 10 years I served as the town of Chester Director of Social Services. He was always willing to lend an immediate hand when the need arose. I counted him as one of my local "band of angels." I enjoyed working with Father Ahern on figuring out ways to help people in need, and appreciated the support he lent me when problems arose, as they are all too apt to do. He was a good man and I will remember him with fondness and gratitude. Godspeed Father.

Father Ahern was a good friend to our family. He was principal of Mercy High School when one of our daughters was there.
He was our pastor at St. Peter Church in
Haddam. We remained in contact, attended
his 60th & 65th celebrations. My daughter
and I took him to lunch at least once a year at the Hideaway Restaurant where he was a frequent diner. We will miss him, but know that he has gone to his reward in Heaven.

One of the nicest man I've ever known. A friend of Pops, he came out of retirement, for his funeral 2 years ago, to be on the alter. Connie and I just greeted him less then 2 weeks ago at Christ the King in Old Lyme. We will miss you.

Maureen Hesney SBHS, Class of 1965. Truly sad to read this today. What a great teacher. He was so open in Religion class to debate and questioning our faith. He was such a down to earth person. He officiated at my first wedding and continued to give me counsel in college and into my twenties. many nice memories of a wonderful man and priest. His years at SBHS were a gift to all his students. Hey was loved and admired.

Not mentioned in his obituary was Father Ahern's affiliation with St. Bernard High School in New London, CT. Those of us in the Class of 1964 remember Father Ahern with affection and were honored to have him attend our 50th high school reunion in July 2014. What joy to reminisce with such a special, holy man who still had his wonderful smile.
While at St. Bernard's, Father Ahern introduced me to St. Jude, Saint of the Impossible, for which I am eternally grateful.
My condolences to Father Ahern's family and friends. May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.

We were fortunate to meet Father Ahern many years ago when he was the pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Groton, Ct. After he left Sacred Heart, Charlie visited him in Chester, and we both visited him in Old Lyme on the way home from a New Hampshire vacation. He was a wonderful pastor, always smiling, always helpful. We know he is with God in Heaven but he will be missed on the earth.

Fr. Ahern epitomized everything a Catholic priest should be and more. He was truly a holy man. Having lived in Old Lyme since 1939 I have had many priests pass through my life here, and no other priest touched my life as he did. I thought maybe that God was going to take him home on Ascension Thursday. I didn't want him to move, because I felt he was our family. I know he doesn't need our prayers as he is already in Heaven but I know he will be praying for all of us. Thank you dear Father Ahern you will be missed. Fondly, Phyllis
