Obituary of Henri Robert Coppes

Henri Robert Coppes, age 88 years, of Westbrook, Connecticut died peacefully, surrounded by his family, on July 7, 2016. Dr. Coppes was born on November 3, 1927 to Dr. A.H.J. and Elizabeth (Hommen) Coppes in Enschede, Netherlands, where he was one of ten children. During World War II, he endured the occupation of the Netherlands growing up under many hardships. He immigrated to the United Sates in 1957 after attending medical school in Amsterdam. He completed his internship at Meriden Hospital, medical residency at Waterbury Hospital, and chief residency at Rochester General Hospital in 1961. He started his medical practice in Milford, CT and provided medical care at Milford Hospital for 35 years. He served as Chief of Medicine and started the first intensive care unit, pulmonary function laboratory, and medical library at Milford Hospital. He also founded Internal Medicine of Milford P.C. He is survived by his beloved wife Jacqueline Waldron Coppes: his children: Mark of Charlestown, RI, David (and Amante) of Stowe, MA, Danielle(and David) King of Old Saybrook,CT, Bryan (and Maureen) of Old Saybrook CT,, and Nicole(and Andrew) Gathy of Waterford, CT: his 12 grandchildren: Elizabeth, Caroline, Margo, Peter, Jack, Cameron, Mac, Holly, Cate, Meika, Elyse, and Julia; his brother Robert of Boekelo, Netherlands and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and 8 siblings. Visiting hours will held on Wednesday, July 13th from 5-7pm at Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main St. Centerbrook. A celebration of his life for family and friends will follow on Thursday, July 14th at the Vicky G. Duffy Pavilion, 155 College St., Old Saybrook from 5-8pm.
