Years after you are gone, I still find myself reaching for the phone to call you and share something I know you'd be interested in. I miss ya buddy. I wish you hadn't been taken so young. I really enjoyed the many years of friendship and a few adventures. You were a generous, fun, sharp, guy.

"Hey You," "Bill," C.G.," "Grubs" Grubber" "Ham" --- these were the names we knew you as at Lawrenceville from 1953-58, but no "Charlie." Nonetheless, you totally reinvented yourself in later life and Hey! You did GREAT, buddy! Nobody who knew you will ever forget you, and your L'ville classmates mourn your passing. We will make sure you get some love in the School's Memorial section, which you deserve. A great career as a pilot, and in the looks department you pulled off that rare feat --- you improved with age!

"Give my my Romeo; and when he shall die,
Take him and cut him out in little stars,
And he will make the face of Heaven so fine
That all the world will be in love with night
And pay no worship to the garish son."

I flew with Charlie at Northwest Airlines and I learned a valuable lesson from him. It was not a good month for either of us.
Years later I was involved in an incident and burned my life to the ground and the event was widely covered in the national media. I was terminated, broken, and devastated, and I went broke within 30 days of the event. I opened the mail to find a cashier's check from Charlie in the amount of $10,000 and I was unable to believe what I was seeing. I felt as if someone had thrown me a lifesaver as I was drowning.
Here was a man whom I had not gotten along with when we'd flown together but who displayed an attitude of selfless compassion as he watched a fellow pilot destroy his career and go to prison. Later, when I returned to N'west we became good friends...and I am so very sad to learn of his passing. He was so much more that I thought when we'd first met so many years earlier...

Condolences to Captain Young's family on his passing. As a MSP flight attendant in the late 70's, it was always great to see Charlie's name on a 727 crew order sheet. I knew that we would be safe with him flying the left seat, and that our crew would have complete backing in any situation. As a side note, he never failed to make a stop at the Bachman Flower Cart in the terminal, to purchase corsages for his flight attendants. We were made to feel special by his kindness, and it set the tone fir the next four or five days of our trip. Soar with the angels Captain Young.

RIP Charlie. Charlie and I spent many hours working on merging a seniority list many years ago. He always was thinking of all the pilots not just one group.
Wonderful memories.
Sorry to read of his passing.

Charlie will be remembered as a caring and helpful person. Always at the ready to give a helping hand. He distinguished himself in the pilot group as a "class act".
My condolences to the family for his passing.

Charlie and I didn't get along when I flew with him as a Second Officer. Yet when I crashed my life he sent a cashier check for $10,000...and I had to look at it several times before I could believe what I was seeing. We were in desperate straits and his unbelievable gesture gave us a brief moment where we could inhale and breathe. Later, when I was in prison, he sent a second one. I struggled for a month because we were broke, but I returned this one. Charlie then enrolled Barbara in a wonderful food plan and she received incredible food once a month. I learned how very wrong I could be when I let my judgement and opinions rule the day. I will never be able to thank him enough for his kindness and generosity. I am so very sad that he's passed on.
