Obituary of Jean Knight Phillips McLeod

Jean Knight Phillips McLeod died peacefully in Essex, CT on March 19, 2017. Born Jean Knight Phillips on January 28, 1922 in Waterbury, CT to Rowley Wilhelm Phillips and Harriette Wheeler Phillips, Jean enjoyed a warm and loving childhood with her three sisters, Harriette Redington, Elizabeth ("Beebee") Howland and Barbara Shove. Jean attended St. Margaret's School in Waterbury and graduated from the Masters School in Dobb's Ferry, NY. She met her husband of 52 years, Charles Anderson McLeod (Andy) at a dance in Waterbury where he was working for the Scovill Manufacturing Company. After serving in the U.S. Navy as a navigator aboard the aircraft carrier Intrepid, Andy began his career at the Chemical Bank in New York City. They married in 1946, and happily settled for over 40 years in Pelham Manor, NY. Andy predeceased her in 1998. Together they raised four children: Jeanne McAndrew (David), Diane McCurdy (John) and Heather Greacen (James). They were predeceased by their son Charles Anderson McLeod, Jr. Jean enjoyed an active life in Pelham associated with many organizations including the Junior League and League Larks, the International Garden Club and the National Association of Colonial Dames. She will be particularly remembered as an outstanding competitor at both the bridge table and on the golf course, where she was a club champion at the Pelham Country Club. She and Andy enjoyed many summers surrounded by family in Weekapaug, Rhode Island while creating and maintaining vibrant friendships within the community. She was a member of the Weekapaug Foundation for Conservation and the Weekapaug Chapel. Jean was known lovingly as "Eloise" by her ten wonderful grandchildren: Matthew, Sean, Timothy, Abigail, Trevor, Terence, Dana, Chrissy, Kelly and Scott. She is survived as well by six beautiful great grandchildren: Eugenie, Peter, Locke, David, Owen and Alexander. A celebration of Jean's life will take place at St. John's Episcopal Church on the corner of Main and Cross Streets in Essex, CT on Saturday, April 29th at 11:00am.
