Obituary of Richard Apell

Richard J. "Rick" Apell, Jr., age 64, of Killingworth, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven surrounded by his loving family and friends. Rick was the beloved husband of Frances C. (Pipes) Apell. She predeceased him on March 15, 2016. Rick was born in New Haven on May 19, 1952, the son of; Dorothy H. (Olsen) Apell of Chester and the late Richard J. Apell. He was raised in Guilford Lakes and Madison. He was a graduate of the Mount Herman Preparatory School in Northfield, Massachusetts. He received his bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of New Haven, and later earned his CPA. He presently was the controller for M & J Bus. Rick enjoyed driving his Corvettes, was an avid fisherman and boater, and enjoyed traveling to visit family in North Carolina. Besides his beloved mother Dorothy, he leaves his two sons; Bryan R. Apell of Haddam, and David M. Sawyer Jr. and his wife Bonnie of Minnesott Beach, NC., his sister; Karen A. Beebe and her husband Michael C. of Old Saybrook and Niantic. His grandchildren; David Sawyer III, of Minnesott Beach NC., and Samantha Jolyn Sawyer of Wilmington NC. He also is survived by his nephews; Michael J. Beebe and Jason R. Beebe, and their families. Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at the Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main Street in Centerbrook, from 5PM to 7PM.
