Obituary of Olin W. Murphy

Olin W. Murphy,III, 63, of 9 Saunders Drive, Niantic, CT, husband of Kathleen (Brunoli) Murphy, died peacefully at home on Sunday, April 23, 2017. He was born in Winsted, CT. on November 1, 1953, son of the late Olin W. and Edith (Cartmell) Murphy. He is survived by his two sons and daughters-in-law, William and Heather Murphy of Paso Robles, California, and Brendan and Tara Murphy of Torrington, CT. He is also survived by his two granddaughters, Ava and Emma, also of California, his sister Karen M. and brother-in-law Vince LeBuffe, and his brother John and sister-in-law Diane Hohusen Murphy. Alas, we have lost a good man who left us too soon, too young. Olin was a friend to many and enemy to none. He was a devoted father, grandfather and husband. He dearly loved his precious golden retrievers, especially Zak and Miller, and many others he rescued and raised. He was an outdoorsman, an enthusiastic pilot of his boat, Murphy's Law, and a master fisherman. He was a self-made man who bought the venerable Avon Paint and Decorating Company with just a credit card and jaunty confidence. He had a wonderful eye for color and décor and exquisite taste. After selling his company, Olin started a second career as a highly successful Mercedes Benz Sales Consultant. He was handy with tools and comfortably capable of building and fixing things. We will miss his sound advice and willingness to help even on the lousy jobs. Olin had an infectious sense of high humor, enjoying every and any clever joke. He was a creative cook and a boundlessly appreciative dinner guest. Olin was fun and he was funny. We will miss Olin's instant laugh. We are thrilled to know that Olin has already hooked a heavenly forty-inch striped bass. Happy trails our friend. A Memorial service will be held on Friday, April 28, 2017 at noon, at the First Congregational Church of Essex, 6 Methodist Hill in Essex, CT. Memorial contributions may be made in Olin's name to Friday's Rescue Foundation, 270 Rogers Road, Groton, CT. 06340, or to the Veterans Honor Guard, C/O Commander Joseph Barry, 111 South Edgewood Road, Niantic, CT. 06357.
