Obituary of Philip G. Putnam

Philip Graves Putnam of Essex, Connecticut, died June 25th, at the age of 76, after a long illness. He is survived by his daughters Andrea Putnam and Tesa Silvestre, his granddaughter Zoey Putnam Boyd, and sister Lynne Putnam. Philip was born in West Reading, PA, the son of Otto and Sarah Putnam. He spent his early years in Shillington, West Reading and Wyomissing, PA, graduating from Wyomissing High School in 1958. Philip obtained his undergraduate degree at Wesleyan University in 1962 and went on to receive an MBA from Harvard Business School. Philip had over 40 years' experience in financing, advising, and investing. He began his career with Smith Barney in New York City and subsequently held a variety of positions, including Executive Vice-President of Brean Murray and managing director of Flagstone Securities. For many years he served on the Board of Directors for Middleby Corporation. In 2004, Philip moved with his wife, Thea, from New York City to Essex, Connecticut, where they established a valued network of new friendships. They loved exploring the beautiful community of Essex and became involved in many local activities. Philip was now in close proximity to his beloved alma mater, Wesleyan, where he enjoyed serving for many years as class agent and fundraiser, for which he received the Wesleyan University Service Award, acknowledging him for his generosity which had inspired and motivated others. Over the years he also enjoyed mentoring Wesleyan students interested in pursuing business degrees. As he often said, "Some people have golf; I have Wesleyan." For his loyal support to the University and for his service to the Gordon Career Center, a Wesleyan classroom was named in his honor. More recently he applied his business acumen to the Essex community, serving as treasurer to the town library from 2012 - 2015. This seemed appropriate, given his lifelong love of reading. During his tenure, he improved the library's finances and was instrumental in repaying the library's long-term loan. Another community service he enjoyed was participating with a group of volunteers who drove people to and from medical appointments. Philanthropic contributions focused on a variety of local organizations, including the Middlesex Community Foundation and a membership of the Essex Land Trust's Legacy Circle. Philip will be missed by his family, his friends, and especially by his dear friend, Jeanne, who lovingly supported him during a difficult illness.
