She was born in Meriden, CT, grew up in Jewett City and West Hartford. Later, she raised her family in Windsor with husband, Clifford Nelson, before moving to Old Saybrook in 1977. Gladys and Cliff eventually moved to Old Lyme in 1993. As a young adult in West Hartford, Gladys worked as a machinist at the Wiremold Company in Elmwood to support the World War II effort, and served as the illustrator for their company newsletter, as well. While in Windsor, Gladys worked in Hartford at the Society for the Prevention of Blindness, was a homemaker and active in the First Church of Windsor. In Old Saybrook, she enjoyed working at The Tracy Insurance Agency. In later years, she was a member of the Ladies Benevolent Society at the First Congregational Church of Old Lyme. She had a special gift for art and was an excellent painter. She particularly liked decorative painting. Her other love was for singing, and she was fond of performing with the Sweet Adelines and the Lymes Village Voices. She adored her pets and was an avid gardener as well. She is survived by three children; her daughter, Lin, and her husband Peter Kardas and granddaughter, Mara Nelson-Kardas, of Olympia, Washington; her son, Gary, and wife, Cindy, of Pawleys Island, SC; her son, David, of Old Lyme and our family's very special friend, Grace Gasteyer with David of Old Lyme; and her sister, Muriel Baglin of PA. Gladys was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Clifford Nelson; her brother Kenneth Fogg of Old Lyme, CT; and her brother, Clifford Fogg of Clearwater, FL. A graveside service will be held at the Duck River Cemetery, McCurdy Road in Old Lyme on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at 2:00PM.
