Obituary of Stephen Putney Munn
Stephen Putney Munn of Hobe Sound, Florida, passed away at his summer home in Old Saybrook, Connecticut on October 1st surrounded by his loving family. He was born on July 1, 1942 in Bay Shore, New York, the son of Allen Munn, who passed away shortly after his birth; he was raised by Catherine (Putney) Munn, his strong and devoted mother. He graduated from Ogdensburg Free Academy in 1960, St. Lawrence University in 1964 and received his M.B.A. from the University of Buffalo in 1969. He was a member of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity and inducted into the St. Lawrence Athletic Hall of Fame for his college football accomplishments. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged after receiving the Bronze Star and the Army Commendations medals. Mr. Munn began his career at Shell, followed by Agway and then Carrier Corporation. He joined Carrier International as President in 1976, rose to Chief Financial Officer of Carrier Corporation and then President, Carrier Transicold. In 1988 Mr. Munn joined Carlisle Companies Inc. as President and Chief Executive Officer until 2001. He added the role of Chairman in January of 1994 and served in that capacity until June, 2007. He remained on the Carlisle Board as Lead Director until his retirement in May, 2015. Mr. Munn also served on the boards of Gannett Company and O'Sullivan Corporation. He was a Director or Trustee of 61 portfolios comprising Prudential Funds. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years Kathryn Ann (Powers), two children, Michele Munn Celestino and husband James of Laurel Hollow, New York and Robyn Munn Gengras and husband Jonathan of Hartford, Connecticut. He leaves five beloved grandchildren whom he adored, James, Ged, Annie, Mary and Katherine. He is also survived by his brother, James Munn and wife Maureen (deceased) of Rochester, New York and niece Beth Munn Griffin (William). He leaves his sister Catherine Morley Forsyth and husband Christopher Forsyth of Newtown Square, Pennsylvania and nephews Stephen Forsyth and Mark Forsyth (Ashley). In addition to his family, Steve had a deep love for his predeceased golden retrievers, Bailey and Gus and a love of the St. Lawrence River where he grew up and spent summers with his friends and family his entire life. Steve was an avid golfer and enjoyed may rounds throughout the country and around the world. A Celebration of Life service will be held at The Medalist Golf Club 9908 SE Cottage Ln, Hobe Sound, FL 33455 on Thursday, November 16th, 2017 at 5pm.
