Fran and Family, I can't express what a great person the world lost. Mel,Tina and I would arrive early every morning and share stories before work. Mel would constantly talk about youth children and those trips up north.I miss him. He was so funny and made us laugh! I began to think he was Irish with his wit!

Dear Fran and Family, Deepest Sympathy on your great loss. Mel was a great guy and a terrific cop whom I and many were fortunate to have known and worked with. As in his career, his determination and perseverance never faulted during his toughest battle. Wishing you and all your family the best during this difficult time and may the peace and joy from fond memories of times past help to lift your spirits. God Bless.
Most Sincerely,
M

I was so sad to hear recently that Mel was not doing well, many members of the Investigative Services Unit we all worked for so many years informed me and were deeply saddened to hear about his decline. We all spoke of the excellent work that he did and was so proud that he was a New Haven Police Detective. I can truly state that he was one of the best, always going the extra mile and then some to solve some of the horrendous crimes that we encountered. It was an honor to work with him and I will never forget the many years that we spent together. God Bless you Mel, you were an inspiration to us all. Michael Sweeney ISU, NHPD.

From the first time I met him, when he was the cop operating Car 43 with Billy Piasyck in 41, he was truly easy to like, and did the same in king to those he met. I was on my first night as a cop, in a patrol car, a rider, who Mel quickly turned over the wheel of the car to. He was great, and trusted me, and I tried never to let him down. In a day and age where anyone who is a cop, or was a cop, can be sometimes judged in the most negative ways, Mel was the ideal cop, because he was a wonderful person. He was truly one of a kind, and always tried to be like his Father, who was another wonderful person. God Bless you Mel, rest in peace.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Mel. I was also a member with him on the Emergency Services team. Mel had a great sense of humor and I am sure he will be missed by many who knew him. During his time with the Detective Unit he had a reputation as a very meticulous investigator. He will be missed.

I have a lot of memories of my Uncle Mel. He was always so much fun when I was a little girl.
-I remember he dressed up as Santa Claus and came to our house. I must have been 3 years old thinking it was really Santa. I sat on his lap and I said you smell like my Uncle Mel.
-Another memory is he would come to my Grandmother's house for lunch when he was a cop in New Haven my sisters and I would be spending the day at grandma's. Uncle Mel would talk to us and make jokes. He was always so nice. He was so good to my Grandmother. I wasn't used to a man being so kind and nice to women and children. One time at grandma's house she had live lobsters and Uncle Mel was there. He took the rubber band off the lobster claws. He was teasing my sister and I with the lobster that it was going to get us. He put it on the floor and let it crawl around. It was funny to my little girl mind.
-One time we went to his house for some kind of party. He took a bunch of kids out for a walk in the woods behind his house. He started talking about bears and how they lived back in the woods. We kept walking then all of a sudden we heard something and Uncle Mel told us to be quiet and listen. He said maybe it's a bear. Then big log came rolling down the hill and there was roaring. All the kids started screaming because we were scared. Uncle Mel had told someone to go up the hill and act like a bear to scare us. It was all a joke.
That's how Uncle Mel was a good humor loving man. He showed my sisters and me how a father/husband is supposed to be. I only wish I could have had more memories with him. Now that I am older and married with a family of my own I married a man very much like my Uncle Mel. I know that my husband and him would have been great hunting/fishing buddies. Constantly playing jokes on each other. I am sad I haven't lived closer these last 21 years. I am grateful for the whole Cartoceti family. I love you all.
