I met Pete when I was visiting Jeff and his family in the U.S. in 2003 the first time. His skills and energy to work on all kind of different projects simultaneously immediately impressed me. What a strong and unique character! I still have fond memories of spending my vacation on his self-made little paradise (Eagle Island).
My sincere condolescences to the Haeni Family.

Jane: Judy and I send our sincere condolences to you and your family.
I have many great memories of Pete as an optimistic, smart, friendly roommate and fellow submariner. We shared many good times! Pete was instrumental in beginning my lifelong love of sailing when we crewed together in the Luders 44s. I regret that our contact later in life was sparse. Judy and I have fond memories of sharing "drag" weekends with you and Pete during weekends at the Academy. We remember visiting your beautiful home in Deep River and I can just imagine Pete taking joy in finding an endless stream of projects to do around the place over the years. Pete's impressive life of service to his country, community and family has been an inspiration. He will be missed!
With sympathy,
Jon and Judy

We were all terribly saddened by the news of Pete's passing.
Pete and the Haeni family have been friends for longer than I can remember. We're neighbors on Eagle Island. Every time we met - I noticed decades ago - Pete radiated his own unique energy of positive enthusiasm, laughter and hope.
One summer that still seems like yesterday, Pete hired my teenage son Ian for the first time to scrape paint and do other chores. I was so proud when Pete said he was a hard worker - and prouder still, each following summer, when he'd ask whether Ian was coming back. Not long after, Ian's younger sister Isabella also received some of her first work experiences under Pete's guidance.
We'll always remember the idyllic excursions on Pete's beloved sailboat, or when we'd exchange mackerel fishing stories, hearing his happy voice on the VHF, tearing around the island in his speedboat to the mailboat dock in less time than it took to get our own rickety outboard fired up, or the countless times he'd help my parents out with one thing or another (usually both).
There's no way to replace his unique brand of positivity. But through his act of sharing that energy and enthusiasm with those around him, we'll always have something truly good to aspire to ourselves.
With our deepest condolences,
Mark, Ann, Ian and Isabella Odom

Dear Jane, Chris, Jeff and family,
We are beside ourselves with sadness that Pete has left the planet. He is a truly beautiful human we will dearly miss. We had such a sweet visit with him on Eagle in August. Even while he was living with physical limitations, Pete's warmth and the sparkle in his eyes were radiant. Pete's generosity, mastery, curiosity and humor will always be legendary on Eagle. We have so many memories of great sails and conversations together, with Pete and all of you, we cherish. Know that you are in our thoughts and we are sending you our deep sympathies during your time of sorrow. May you always feel Pete's presence near and your memories of him bring you comfort, laughter, and countless blessings.
A light went out for us here and we have to believe a bright star is born.
With love,
Abby & Ellen

Jane and family,
I always looked up to Pete. Whenever I saw him he had an honest greeting with a smile and his special laugh.
I admired his many skills, talents and boundless energy. Yet he remained down to earth and never full of his efforts and accomplishments.
I feel fortunate to have known him and having had his influence on my life. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Pete was a great friend. I really enjoyed my time hunting with him at the farm. He always brought a project during hunting season that he spent more time on than hunting. He has a wonderful family that I got to know n enjoy spending time with. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Pete lived in my backyard, or perhaps I lived in his front yard. Either way, it was a treat to have the him as my neighbor. Especially in February, when the sweet aroma from Pete's Maple Sugar Shack boiling operation wafted into my yard. I also had the privilege to serve on the Deep River Land Trust Board with Pete. He had the amazing ability to listen to the various opinions on an issue, and then offer a simple synopsis which the disparate voices could all agree. Jane and Family, may your memories of your Great Idea-Man, Pete ever sustain you.

I met Pete in 1994 when I moved to Connecticut. He was a pioneer in his field, and was always supportive and encouraging of new people entering the field. He was a truly great scientist, but more than that a truly great person. My condolences to his family - he will be missed by all of us.

So sad to hear of Pete's passing. As a geophysicist, I encountered Pete on an annual basis at the SAGEEP (Symposium on the Applications of Geophysics to Environmental and Engineering Problems) meetings. He made many significant contributions to the profession, and it was always entertaining and informative to chat with him.

Jane, Chris, and Jeff-
So sorry to hear of your loss. Pete mentored me at the USGS from '85-'96 and I always will have fond memories of him. During our lunch time walks and travel for "work" I heard so much about you, the building of your home, and so many Eagle Island adventures. I still find myself trying to match his good work ethic and enthusiasm. That's how I will be remembering Pete.
For some reason I also clearly remember how proud he was getting that 'athletic cut' suit in the 90's for a special occasion, somehow weaving coolness into formal wear.
I really am sorry for your loss and our thoughts and prayers are with you and yours.
Gary (Leslie, Ben and Zach too)
