Obituary of Robert Duffy
Robert Francis Duffy, formerly of Greenwich, CT, died peacefully at home in Ivoryton, CT on March 18. Born on May 15, 1919 in Wilmington, DE, Mr. Duffy joined the United States Navy as an aviator in 1941. During World War II, Lieutenant Commander Duffy served in both the Pacific and European theaters. He patrolled with the Royal Air Force on D-Day and later received the British Distinguished Flying Cross. After retiring from the Navy in 1946, he went on to receive a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Lehigh University in 1948. Mr. Duffy married Jane Kirk of New Rochelle, NY in 1946 and worked for twenty-five years at the Union Carbide Corporation. From 1972 to 1986, he served as President and Chairman of the Board of the Southern Welding Supply Company, Savannah, GA. A communicant of Christ Church, Greenwich, he was a member of the Greenwich Country Club for more than fifty years. Predeceased by his wife, Jane, Mr. Duffy is survived by his brother, Edward Duffy of Wilmington, DE, and his four children: Kirk Duffy of Savannah, GA; Angenette Meaney of Omaha, NE; Charity Duffy of Portland, ME; and Sara Medlin of Ivoryton, CT; as well as nine grand-children and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 26 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Christ Church, 254 East Putnam Ave. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to The Metropolitan Opera, Office of Planned Giving, 30 Lincoln Center, New York, NY 10023.
