Obituary of Paul Michael Worrall MD

Paul Michael Worrall left this world peacefully on July 18, 2014 surrounded by his loving family. Paul was born in the southern Cotswolds area in Gloucestershire, England on January 17, 1935. After Grammar School he entered the University of Birmingham where he earned a degree in Science and later graduated with a degree in medicine which included a six month study course in tropical medicine in Nigeria. After graduation he held internist positions at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, Mary Abbots and Fulham Hospitals, London. His main interest, however, was in pharmaceutical drug research which led him to take positions in Cyanamid of Great Britain (Lederle Labs in the U.S.A.) where he met his wife. He and his wife moved to the United States where he worked for 28 years in various senior executive positions for Bristol Myers Squibb in Syracuse, NY, New York City, and Evansville, Indiana where he was Vice President of Research at Mead Johnson (a subsidiary of Bristol Myers Squibb). During the Vietnam War he was called to serve in the United States Army. So the family moved to Washington, D.C. where he worked at the Surgeon General's office on Malaria Research, a disease rampant in Vietnam. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal and was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonial. Paul had a great mind, his judgement was wise and much respected and he dearly loved his family. He will be remembered for his kind and gentle spirit, his joke telling, his infectious laugh and his imitations of the local Cotswold accent. He leaves behind his wife, Cicely, son Martin of Tucson, Arizona, and daughter-in-law, Sophie and grandchildren, Percival, Ulysse and Eleonore, daughter Suzanne Elkind of Cambridge, MA and son-in-law, Ken, and granddaughters, Julia and Haley, his sister, Jean Mary Pullen of Gloucestershire and many nieces and nephews. He lived a fulfilling and meaningful life touching so many with his generous and gentle nature and will be dearly missed by his family and friends. Donations in his honor may be made to St. John's Episcopal Church, P. O. Box 422, Essex, CT 06426. or to Doctors Without Borders, USA, P.O. Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 2141-5030.
