Obituary of Alice Powers
Alice S. Powers, age 89, passed away on Friday, February 18, 2011 at the Avalon Health Center in Mystic. She was born on March 16, 1921 in Mount Vernon, New York the daughter of James A. and A. Shirley (Arnold) Powers. She was a graduate of the Emma Willard School in Troy, NY and also was a graduate of Smith College class of 1942 in Northampton, MA. Alice had been an active resident of Essex for the past twenty five years having moved here following retirement from her career in advertising in New York City. She had served as the Vice-President of Human Resources at Young and Rubicam. Alice loved the outdoors during all seasons of the year. On the water she sailed and crewed on all types on sailboats and motor yachts, and loved to canoe on the Connecticut River. As an avid skier she served on the Board of Directors for many years of the Amateur Ski Club of New York. She skied throughout Europe and enjoyed the club’s lodge at Mad River Glen in Vermont. Alice served her community as a former President of the Essex Land and Conservation Trust and was a member of the Connecticut River Museum, Essex Garden Club, Essex Yacht Club, and was also a member of the Old Lyme Country Club where she loved to golf. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her brothers, Robert and William Powers. Alice is survived by her nephew, James H. Powers, of Montpelier, Vermont and his partner, Marilyn Hart and sons, Charles, Otis and Michael Hart. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
