Obituary of Douglas Neville Jones
Douglas N. “Doug” Jones, Jr. passed away Sunday morning February 6th at Middlesex Hospital. He was born in Oklahoma City, OK on June 23, 1916. He spent his freshman year at the University of Arkansas and graduated from the University of Oklahoma. He joined the IBM Corporation as a student salesman and spent 37 years with the company, leaving to volunteer as a private in World War II and coming out as a Captain three years later. After his military service, he returned to IBM, and in the course of his marketing career he managed small, medium and large offices and a district for the company and was brought to New York as personnel director for the Electrical Accounting Machine division. He took over as Group personnel director, heading personnel functions for all domestic divisions of IBM and retired in 1975 as corporate Director of Personnel Relations. After retirement Doug moved from New Canaan to Essex where he served at various times on the boards of the Essex Conversation Trust, the Essex Music Series, the Essex Library, the Planning Commission and the Essex Elementary School Building Committee. He was a permanent advisor to the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts. After many years Doug and Mary moved to Essex Meadows where they have resided since 2000. He was a member of the Dauntless Club, a board member of the Old Lyme Country Club, past president of Lighthouse Point Beach Association. Doug was a founding director of the Maritime Bank and Trust Company and founding Trustee of the Essex Elementary School Foundation. Doug was a long time member the Essex Rotary Club and was honored to be named a Paul Harris Fellow in 1998. He is survived by Mary, his beloved wife of 65 years, his son Douglas III and daughter Robin both of Tucson Arizona, as well as a host of family and friends to numerous to mention. A celebration of his life will be held at the Deep River Concrgretional Church in Deep River, CT on Friday February 11th at 2 p.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers a donation may be made in his name in Essex Meadows Scholarship Fund or the Essex Elementary Foundation. Arrangements by Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home in Centerbrook.
