Obituary of Darwin W. Schmidt

Darwin W. Schmidt, 91, of Chester died on February 2, 2011 at Aaron Manor in Chester after a period of declining health. He was the loving husband of Betty (Marple) Schmidt. Darwin was born in Philadelphia, PA, son of the late Charles H. & Alma (Amos) Schmidt. Darwin and his wife Betty were residents of Hamilton Square, NJ for many years before moving to Chester nine years ago. He was a WWII Navy veteran serving in England & France and was involved with the design of the floating docks used during the D-Day invasion, he graduated from Lafayette College in 1942 with a degree in Electrical Engineering and worked with New Jersey Bell for 38 years after the war. During his retirement Darwin was active with Meals-On-Wheels, Reach for Recovery and preparing tax returns at their local Senior Center. One of Darwin’s joys was a great day on the golf course and then sitting on the porch in New Hampshire. In addition to his wife he is survived by his two children; Barbara Macgregor and her husband Alan of Essex, CT and Paul W. Schmidt and his wife Deborah of Wolfeboro, NH, his grandchildren Lyn, Nancy and Courtney and two extraordinary great grandchildren Caroline & Jillian. Memorial Services will be held at the 1st Congregational Church, Methodist Hill Rd. in Essex on Monday, Feb.7 at 11am. Interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be sent in Darwin’s name to Chester Village West, Scholarship Foundation, 317 W. Main St. Chester, CT 06412, Attn: Ed Bradley.
