Obituary of Julia S. Grote

Julia Mary (Slavec) Grote passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 20th after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Carmine J. Grote in 1997 after 52 years of marriage. She was born September 2, 1921 in Colorado, daughter of the late Antonio and Mary Slavec. A proud member of the United States Marine Corps, she served at the Pentagon during WWII. She was transferred to Camp Pendleton where she met the love of her life. Upon discharge, the couple moved to Chester, CT to live and raise their family. Prior to retirement she was employed by Reg. Dist. 4 as a bookkeeper. Active in the community, Julia was a parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church, American Legion, St. Ann’s Guild and was a former Girl Scout leader. She was a passionate reader, knitter, traveler, baker and Grandmother. She will be remembered by her family as a woman of honor, compassion and dignity. She is survived by her two daughters and her son and their spouses; Patricia and Raymond Maikowski of Deep River, Marilyn and Terry Malcarne of Deep River, Thomas and Debra Grote of Middletown and five grandchildren who adored her; Aaron Beard, Thomas Grote, James Maikowski, Tessa Malcarne and Victoria Pipkin, a great granddaughter Mara Pipkin, her brother Tony Slavec of Colorado and many nieces and nephews. Her daughter Julia Ann and her brother Rudy Slavec predeceased her. Private graveside services with full military honors will be held in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Chester. The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude the Sbriglio family and staff of Aaron Manor for their compassion and care given to their mother.
