Obituary of Carla Atherton

Carla M. Atherton, age 93 of Essex passed away at Essex Meadows Healthcare Center on Monday evening August 15, 2011. She was the beloved wife of the late Charles L. Atherton. She had been a resident of Essex Meadows for the past 23 years and was formerly of Southbury. She was born December 17, 1917 in Milan, Italy the daughter of Alban and Marie-Therese (Joanny) Musgrave-Thomas. Mr. Musgrave-Thomas was Judge, Chief Justice and diplomat for the British Government. Mrs. Atherton traveled the world at a very early age and as young women developed the love of language which she treasured for her entire life. She held degrees in English and French and received her Masters degree in Italian at Berkley. She was fluent in English, French, German and Italian. Mrs. Atherton was the Chief of Terminology and Translation and was an interpreter for the United States Government working in the Department of Defense from 1961-1975. She also was employed by the United Nations and worked in intelligence for the British Government. She was a member of the Federal Society of Linguists and the Christian Scientist Society of Westbrook. She is survived by her step-son, Norman Noble and his wife DenisAnn of Arizona and Washington State, their 5 children and 15 grandchildren. Mrs. Atherton’s funeral service will be held at the First Congregational Church of Deep River, 1 Church Street in Deep River, on September 14th at 11 am.
