Obituary of James Jones

James Douglas (Jim) Jones, Sr. of Haddam, CT passed away on Sunday, August 21,2011 with family beside him. Jim was born on March 11, 1929 in Newport, R.I. and was a graduate of North Kingstown High School's class of 1946. He joined the army in June of that year and became a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division. Upon receiving an honorable discharge, Jim returned to R.I. and married the former Elizabeth Ann Shallow, now deceased. They had three children and continued to live in North Kingstown, RI. Jim was a firefighter for the Newport Fire Department then worked in the fields of finance and real estate. In 1977 he married his current wife, Peggy Jones of Bunnell, FL and gained three stepchildren. Together Jim and Peggy owned their own business in Jaffrey, N.H. until retiring in 1984. They moved from N.H. to Palm Coast, FL where Jim once again took up golf and loved the game. Jim was very involved in fundraising for the American Cancer Society, organized a variety show and helped with the Relay for Life program. Jim was also appointed as a fund raising organizer for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. He was always available to help his many friends and family and helped others in various ways. Jim always stood up for what he believed in and wasn't afraid to fight for a principle. Jim is survived by his wife of 34 years, Peggy Jones of Haddam, Ct, his son James D. Jones Jr. and wife Lise of Wellesley MA, his daughter Sharon Jones Briggs of Coventry, RI, his brother John (Jack) Jones and wife Barbara, of Middletown, RI, his sister-in-law Elsa Jones also of RI, three step children: Suzette Pellicer and Herschel C. King Jr. of Bunnell, Florida and Vicki King Fontneau of Killingworth, CT, his son-in-law Dan Milko of Lake City, Florida, five grandchildren: Christopher, Andrew and Molly Milko, Amy and Marc Briggs, along with 8 step-grandchildren, one great grandson, 13 step great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter Kathy Jones Milko of Wickford, RI and his older brother, Michael Jones of Newport, RI. Jim's family would like to extend their gratitude to all the staff at Peregrine's Landing in Clinton, Ct for the care given him there, as well as the care given by Hospice. He will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him. Calling hours will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Thursday, August 25 at the Robinson, Wright & Weymer funeral home at 34 Main St. Centerbrook, CT. A Celebration of Life will be held at the funeral home at 11:00am on Friday, August 26. Burial will follow at the Winthrop Cemetery on Route 80 in Deep River, CT.
