Ken & Pat Robertson - Galway, NY - Neil was my BEST man posted a condolence
Sunday, October 30, 2011
On Sunday, October 23rd, it was exactly 35 years and one fortnight ago that my friend, Neil Smith stood beside me as my BEST man, as my wife Pat and I got married in the Congregational Church in Deep River. EVERY single year since then, Neil and Sandy, and Pat and I celebrated part of New Year's Eve or New Year's Day with each other (often with other friends as well, most often with Jim and Pat Carini). I have many great memories of our friendship including the time Neil and Sandy visited us in upstate NY in early October, and the early 10-12" freak snowstorm they had to drive through to get home. Or our trip together to Myrtle Beach and the many friendly golf matches. I also remember Neil's many acts of simple kindness and devoted friendship when I would occasionaly ask Neil to help my mom with something because I was 3 hours away in NY. There was never a moment's hesitation - he was always willing to help. No one could ever ask for a better friend.

Mr. Smith was one of the best teachers i've ever had. in 7th and 8th grade we had so much fun in his class. He introduced "The Outsiders" to us which was the best book i have ever read, probably the only book i have ever read fully. He was always a happy guy, and loved teaching us. Even though I don't go to Sterling, I know that Mr. Smith could brighten a room with his witty, but funny, jokes. When I went to visit, he would always greet me with a warm, kind smile. He had genuine personality that will never be forgotten. I, as well as many others, will love and miss him... forever and always <3>

Mr. Smith was a great teacher. He really knew his stuff. I enjoyed coming into school everyday and seeing him outside waiting for everyone to just welcome them and say good morning. I remember in class we were reading a book Skeleton Key and Mr Smith had us stand up move all the desks and get in a circle he grabbed his pirate hat and we would throw it around the room to our classmates and dance and just have a good time it was such a nice thing to see Mr. Smith stand up and enjoy us all having fun. I will miss Mr Smith a lot. LA class will never be the same without him. <3>

Mr. Smith was not only my 7th and 8th grade reading teacher, but a role model. Me and a friend would always love messing around with him in homeroom everyday by either playing pranks on him or taking his wheelchair for a spin. He was a great man and put a smile on for us everyday and kept us laughing throughout the day. He used to tell us all he played for the red sox and he was always going to be "83 tomorrow." We will all miss you Mr. Smith.

Neil was definitely one of a kind. He was gentle and fun loving, respectful and respected, giving and more...He loved all of the students and could make you smile on the bleakest of days. Lunch will not be the same without you...Your craving for shepherd's pie and pudding was hysterical. You may not be here, but our memories will last forever. Rest in peace, my friend.

Well...with the POSSIBLE exception of that time that Neil sent through the mail to me in VIRGINIA a large box FULL of smelly vegetable scraps that he wanted me to throw in Jim's (equally smelly) compost pile! Eeeeeewwww! LOL But seriously, Sandy and family, words cannot express my sorrow. I will sorely miss that great guy!

Mr. Smith was one of my most favorite teachers. Every time I entered his class, he had a smile on his face. Aside from reading, he taught me lots of things about life. But the thing that he taught me most, was never let anything stop you from doing what you want most. That, I will never forget. Mr. Smith was not only a good teacher to many students, but an amazing friend to all. His smile & his laughter would make your day so much brighter, and would put you in the best of moods. Mr. Smith may be gone, but he most definitely will never be forgotten. Forever in our hearts, Mr. Smith! Rest In Peace. <3>

Sandy & Family,
As I think of Neil, I am reminded of his kindness toward me, especially when I first moved from New York City to Centerbrook, Connecticut to attend Valley Regional High School. We became friends instantly! He carried my books from class to class (and you, Sandy, never minded because he was, my "big brother" --- (though he told everyone I was his professional "baby-sitter")!!! He always made me laugh out loud. His sense of humor was a natural part of his very easy-going personality.I still have a beautiful mirror hanging in my dining room from "The Finishing Touch", which hopefully I can cherish for many years to come. Neil and you always helped me with decorating, wall papering, and painting ideas. You were truly a perfect couple! Neil will also be thought of fondly as a truly faithful friend and gentleman. He will be missed on this earth. Our Heavenly Father has welcomed him home. May He now bestow His peace in your heart and home during this time of great earthly loss. God bless you and your lovely family.
With love in Christ Jesus,
Cammy

I was sorry to hear of Neil's passing, and for your loss, however it did bring back a flood of good memories from our school days. My family moved to Deep River at the start of my 7th grade year at Vally Regional. I didn't know anybody and Neil became one of my first friends. We stayed close for several years but gradually drifted apart. When ever I would run into him over the years after graduation it was always a cheerful reunion. Mr. Smith was proabably one of my favorite teachers. He was always so soft hearted and kind, and I really loved him the a family member. He always told me and evryone around me that we can achieve anything if we put our minds to it. I remember when I was in his 7th grade class last year, he would have Jolly Ranchers and he would go to toss them in the air. When my eyes followed te cany he would say with big smile,"Jolly Ranchers don't come from up there?" I will truly miss walking in to school every morning to greet him in his wheelchair at the end of the hall. I actually still remember the last thing he remembers of me. Last year I had terrible grades in L.A. and this year I got my progress report and had and A in that class, so I showed him the grade. Instantly he burst into a large smile and said,"I am so happy for you!" I am truthfully happy went knowing I had improved as a student.

Mr. Smith was an excellent teacher. I had the pleasure of being in his classroom as a paraprofessional for two years with my 1:1 student. The lengths that he went to making us feel welcome in his class were great. The Scrabble tournaments were loved by all! My daughter, Victoria was also fortunate enough to have Mr. Smith as a teacher and she loved going to his class. He will truly be missed by all that had the pleasure of knowing him.

How to begin. I met "Mr. Smith" when my son Matt was in 7th grade at Sterling School. Matt was having trouble with his grades and that year I learned how well I would get to know his teachers. My first impression of Mr. Smith was that he would be easy to talk to. I felt comfortable talking with him because I knew he was not judging my son. He sincerely cared. Over the years that followed Mr. Smith had my daughter Gabby, and sons Jeremiah and Elijah. They ALL loved him! Respect was not something we had to tell them to treat him with because they already had so much for him. The news of his passing hit us the same way it does of one's own family member. We are still in disbelief and this evening, I find myself comforting my youngest son. Mr. Smith had a gift. He knew how to share that gift as well. I think he did so without even knowing it. When I think of his smile, or his soft voice; I am thankful to have known him. I am so very grateful that he was in my children's lives AND hearts. The mark he left on our family will forever be remembered and cherished. Thank you Mr. Smith not only for the smiles you shared and for the ones you created. May God bless you and your family. And may you forever rest in the Peace of Our Lord. Melodie Fontenault and Family

Within a couple of minutes, I was leaning back in my chair, my hands clasped behind my head, and we were sharing stories like we had been friends for years. Neil did that ... he made you feel so comfortable instantly. That is a quality that so few have. I am truly heart-broken. I will always remember Neil for his good nature, willingness to comfort a friend and for his wonderful stories...many about his time spent with his family. He was quite the character...whether it was surprising the kids (and adults) by showing up in a rabbit suit, gluing brillo pads to his chin for a costume or racing me down the hallway in chairs...he was always able to take a joke as well as orchestrate one. It was a true pleasure to have known him. Love in my heart always...Penny
