Obituary of Evelyn R. Purdy

Evelyn (Evie) R. Purdy, age 91, beloved wife and mother, passed away January 14, 2012. Evelyn was born in Elizabeth, NJ on August 1, 1920 and spent her childhood and younger years in Hillside, NJ. A graduate of Douglas College, she received her RN from the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing in 1944 and was subsequently employed as a head nurse. She also served in the Army Nurse Corp and three years at Presbyterian Hospital in Newark. She married Richard R Purdy in 1950 and raised her family in Stamford, CT, moving to Essex, CT in 1971 and finally to Essex Meadows in 2004. While in Stamford, Evelyn was active in Scouting and was on the board of the League of Women Voters. In Essex, she was a member and past president of the Essex Catholic Women's Group, as well as volunteering in various nursing homes and Red Cross blood drives. She and her husband were former members of the Niantic Bay Yacht Club and the Old Lyme Country Club .Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Marty M. Purdy of Old Saybrook, her son, Timothy R. Purdy of Niantic, grandsons Richard and Christopher, sister Marian Hauck and brother-in-law John Hauck of Nazareth, PA, numerous devoted nieces and nephews, dear friend Gladys O'Flyn of Old Saybrook, sister-in-law Dorcas Purdy Turoski of San Diego, and cousin-in-laws Louis and Carol Kaufman of Clinton, Iowa.Evelyn was predeceased by her beloved husband of 59 years, Richard, her brother Frederick Conran, and her sister, Agnes Conran. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Gladys Boynton O'Flyn and the staff of Essex Meadows, for their kind support and loving care. A Memorial Mass will be held at 12 noon on Friday, January 20, 2012 at Our Lady of Sorrows Roman Catholic Church, 14 Prospect Street, Essex, CT 06426. A reception will be held after the Mass at Hamilton Hall at Essex Meadows, 30 Bokum Road, Essex, CT 06426. A private burial will be at Union Cemetery in Niantic.
