A better beoemrtar would be to take the average of the school systems ACT and SAT scores and compare that against average teacher salaries in that district against the local average salary then apply whether or not they are subject to collective bargaining. That way you can compare whether or not professionalism counts, and whether a community values education and the true cost of education. Additionally, then apply the school districts success rate with the property values in that community against other communities who's school do not perform as well or even those who perform better.I live in a classic example of that, and we did weigh the school district and its historic performance against the other.Chicago metro area districts before buying. District 211 did not disappoint. Both the boys scored 30+ on ACT and home value rose over 75% (net) including the drastic drop in area home values in surrounding areas. Our district has only masters in education or better at the Middle School and HS level. Our teachers are some of the best paid in Chicago metro area (I think 5th highest) and our home was reasonably protected in value, our kids are now in college, and I feel fine about the overall quality of life in a community of shared values.Check the value against measurables when considering what you get with your property tax dollars.I pay $2,000 a year in Walsh County taxes and haven't been there since I was 15. I have no problem with that, as they try hold the line up there and keep the schools in Park River semi vibrant in addition to trying to keep their infrastructure intact.I pay over $7,000 a year to Cook County and the local tax dudes here in the burbs.I owe my the salary and benefits I receive in the construction industry, to a great degree, to the collective bargaining results in the construction unions who represent the rank and file on the projects I oversee. As do the managers, engineers, and other industry professionals who are not currently represented b

To Gordon's Family:
Gordon, was highly respected for his wisdom, his calm demeanor, his wholesome personality and his excellent leadership. He was very approachable and sincerely cared for his employees. He took a great deal of interest, pleasure and pride in mentoring his people. Personally, Gordon helped me grow as an individual and gave me the opportunity to self actualize. He was so committed to his staff and getting the job done right that when BNE was no longer his took it too much to heart, when in fact the circumstances were well beyond his control. May God be with you, Gordon. You will be truly missed.
Sincerely,
John DiBella

Sandy, Jose and I enjoyed our times with you and Gordon. Each of us has had challenging passages since then: your divorce and Jose's seven-year illness and then death in 1996. I truly appreciate reading that you remained Gordon's best friend, a real tribute, certainly to you and perhaps to you both.
Gratefully, Jose and I already had moved to Middlebury, VT, in 1988, and I remain able to celebrate all that this college town and the Champlain Valley offer.
Know that I appreciate what is happening in your life right now. I welcome your being in touch with me when that seems right for you.

Gordie and I were in Painter Hall our freshmen year and joined KDR as sophomores. We played on our fraternity flag-football team and I tried to follow him down the hills in the winter, never could. We both loved humor and stories, he had some of the best. One day Bobo, the Midd ski coach, set the ski jump lip at too sharp an angle. When Gordie tested it he shot strainght up into the air. He told me he could "see Montreal". Then he came straight down landing in a heap breaking both skis, busted his knee and ankle and was on crutches for a long time. Gordie was a good friend, sorry our lives did not cross more often after graduation.

What a sad day for the Ulmer family and the CBT family. I have so many wonderful memories of Gordon and the times we were together both at work and away from work. He taught me and many others so much about banking and life in general that we will forever be grateful. You helped shape many of us into the men and women we are today and for that we will remember you until the day we met again. Rest in Peace my friend.

Gordon(Pops),was a kind and gentle man. He always had time to make a child feel special or important. He was always the one to give them an ice cream or a treat. He opened his heart and home to them. We thank him for being part of our lives.

To the Ulmer Family:
Please accept my deepest sympathy for the loss we all share.
It was my privilege to serve with Gordon on the Hartford and Rayonier Boards.
Though he never got over the fact that I was both a lawyer AND a Democrat, we became good friends and had many good times (on the cigarette boat and train rides in New Zealand stand out--he loved railroad history!!).
Extremely well-read, a stickler for grammar, instinctively wise and a boastful grandfather, his company was always interesting.
Please know of my prayers for the strength of his surviving loved ones and for Gordon's eternal peace.

To Gordon's Family ~~ So many of us in the CBT family loved and admired Gordon. He cared about people and often helped with their careers well beyond what his job required. Gordon's intellect, energies, and skilled management were iconic aspects of working at CBT. In Operations we used to say that if Gordon asked us to walk across the Connecticut River for him, we'd find a way to do so.
We were so fortunate to have Gordon's presence at CBT Alumni Club social events over the past two decades. You could watch people's faces light up as they made their way over to greet him. And, no one could work a room as well as Gordon could!
So we mourn with you and you have our sympathy in this profound loss to your family. The CBT family also feels this deeply and I hope that knowing that helps by some small measure.
With very deep sympathy,
Noreen P. Cullen
Vice President, CBT Alumni Club

Sandy- please accept my sincere sympathies on Gordon's passing. I used to visit with you in Vermont at the farm when we would leave him off after dragging him all over the state visiting accounts. He was the one executive officer that really took the bank failure personally. He really was the only one that really cared. A great guy and a caring individual who will be greatly missed by so many of us from the bank.
I hope you are doing well and thank you for inviting me into your home all those times so many years ago.
