Obituary of Charles E. Thompson
Charles E. Thompson, age 94 of Chester, formerly of Ivoryton, the beloved husband of Muriel (Johnson) Thompson, passed away on September 2, 2014. He was born in Piermont, NY on July 7, 1920. After graduating from Tappan Zee High School he worked in New York City with an engineering firm. He proudly served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II as a member of the 2765th Photo Mapping Company. Charles started his own business, manufacturing materials-handling equipment in West Nyack, NY. He served as a Republican committeeman in Rockland County, NY and also served on the local school board. Charles was offered the opportunity to join the newly-formed Power Systems Division of United Technologies and moved to Wethersfield in 1960. He returned to Essex after 25 years with UTC as Manager of Design and Quality Assurance. An active Rotarian, he organized the first golf tournament, and was a recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow Award. He served as Treasurer of the Essex Ambulance Association and was a Deacon in The First Congregational Church of Essex where he also served on the Building Committee. An avid boater, he enjoyed many summers with his family on New England waters. He became a Florida resident for several years residing in Vero Beach where he enjoyed golfing. Besides his wife of 71 wonderful years Muriel, whom he married in March of 1943 he leaves his daughter, Christine Thompson; his son, Carl and his wife Jessica; his daughter, Susan and her husband, Kim Winchell, and his five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A special source of pride, Charles spent two years working on the restoration of the Mill Pond on the Falls River following the flood of 1982. He got it done!! Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2014 from 2:00PM-4:00PM at the Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main Street in Centerbrook. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Charles name to the Essex Foundation, Mill Pond Fund, P.O. Box 64, Essex, CT 06426.
