Obituary of Charles H. Schoch

Charles H. Schoch (Chuckie), 91, died peacefully on Dec. 9, 2012, at Apple Rehab Saybrook. He was the beloved husband of Anna (Hall) Schoch for sixty-five years. Born Jan. 8, 1921, Charles was raised in Bangor, PA, where he enlisted and honorably served our country as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WW II in Guam. After returning home he decided to visit family in Essex. It was at that moment that changed his life forever. At the annual Shad Bake Charles met the love of his life, Anna, and they were wed May 17, 1947. He returned to PA and enjoyed a short career with Julius Kaiser, Bangor, PA until 1955. Charles then moved to Essex, where he built a new home and life with his family. He took a position with Conrac-Cramer, in Old Saybrook where he remained until his retirement in 1986. Most everyone knew Charles as "Chuckie". His smile would light up a room, his laugh was infectious, and he could not go anywhere without making a friend. Family and friends will remember his famous driving "short cuts", baking holiday cookies (didn't matter which holiday!), and overall love of life. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Essex and Estuary Lodge No. 43 AF & AM in Old Saybrook, also having served as past master of the Mt. Olive Lodge, Deep River. Chuckie is survived by his wife, three daughters (Nancy Schieferdecker, Cynthia Schoch, Barri Belfanti), and two son in-laws (Walter Schieferdecker, Thad Belfanti). "Pa", as he was referred to by his three granddaughters (Dawn and Kyle Schieferdecker and Shannon Belfanti) will be remembered dearly. A private visitation was held for immediate family. A Memorial Service and burial will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: Essex Ambulance Association, P.O. Box 233, Ivoryton, CT 06442; Essex Fire Engine Co. #1, P.O. Box 911, Essex, CT 06426; Estuary Lodge No. 43 AF & AM, P.O. Box 206, Deep River, CT 06417-0206. The Schoch family is very grateful to Apple Rehab Saybrook and their fine care givers who have provided loving care and attention to Chuckie over the past year.
