Obituary of Edward Leitner

Edward Leitner, 101, died Tuesday, January 30, 2013 at Fauquier Health Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Warrenton, Virginia. He was predeceased by his wife Eva Blanche (Yanke), brothers Rudy and John. He leaves his daughter, Barbara Leitner Ziman of Warrenton, Virginia, grandchildren Brian and Elaine Ziman of Centreville, Virginia, Matthew and Alicia Ziman of Nutter Fort, West Virginia, great grandson Noah Bryce Ziman of Nutter Fort and several nieces and nephews. Born in New York City on July 27th, son of Rudolph and Fanny (Jautz) Leitner, the family moved to a farm in the Pond Meadow district of Westbrook in 1920. He remained a Westbrook resident until 2012.After graduating from Pond Meadow School, Mr. Leitner worked at a variety of jobs including the building of the Merritt Parkway. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and served with the 100th Division in Europe during World War II, and was awarded the Bronze Star and a number of other honors. On completion of his service in 1946, he returned to Westbrook where he purchased property on Horse Hill and married in 1949. The family moved to Los Angles, California, where Mr. Leitner worked as a mechanic for Douglas Aircraft helping build several engines now displayed in the Smithsonian Institution Air & Space Museum in Washington, DC. Upon his return to Westbrook, he worked for CDOT and retired in 1974 from Shoreline Washed Sand and Stone in Madison. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No.87 in Madison for nearly 50 years and was a member of the American Legion. He was an avid gardener, growing fruits and vegetables to share with family and friends. His lawn was the envy of all who passed by. He was also a talented woodworker, furnishing chairs, tables, jewelry boxes and toys to lucky recipients. He enjoyed visiting historic sites, national parks, monuments and loved to travel. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday at the Robinson, Wright & Weymer Funeral Home, 34 Main St. Centerbrook from 4-6pm. Funeral services are Wednesday at the funeral home at 10am.
