Obituary of William B. Bateman

William Bailey Bateman, 88, died Wed, Feb. 13, 2013 in Essex CT after a long fight with Parkinson's disease. He is survived by Nancy, his wife of 65 years, his children Pam Bateman, Bob Bateman, Carol Story and Sunny (Tim) O'Brien, his brother John Bateman, his three grandchildren, John, Katie and Andrew Bateman as well as many nieces and nephews. Bill lived a full life and was a great husband, father and friend. The son of Hortense Bailey Bateman and Everett Johnson Bateman, Bill grew up in Peacedale, RI before moving, with his wife Nancy, to New York City. Later they moved to Darien CT where they lived for many years raising their four children. While living in Darien, he enjoyed sailing and playing tennis at Noroton Yacht Club and skiing at Okemo Mountain, Ludlow, VT. He took great pleasure in spending time with his family and traveled to all of the continents with his wife. They traveled to many exotic places, including Antarctica, Africa, China, the Yukon Territories and even took an ice breaker through the Northwest passage. He had an illustrious career in the banking industry working for many years for Chase Manhattan Bank and the Bank of Montreal. He spent the last years of his career living in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and retired first to Quechee VT where he enjoyed playing golf and skiing before moving to Essex CT. He was always active in his community and served on several boards including the NY Heart Association, the Juilliard School and the United Church of Christ. He served in the Navy during WWII on the USS Sirona as a LTJG and graduated from both Brown University and Harvard School of Business. A special thanks to all of the staff at Essex Meadows for their loving care and support. There will be a private graveside ceremony Tues., Feb. 19th. All are welcome to attend a Celebration of Life reception afterwards in Hamilton Hall at Essex Meadows, 30 Bokum Rd, Essex, CT from 1:30pm-3:30pm. At the family's request, in lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Parkinsons Disease Association CT Chapter, 27 Allendale Drive, North Haven, CT 06473.
