Obituary of Judith E. Ozimek

Judith E. (Koehler) Ozimek, 93, of Essex died peacefully at Peregrine's Landing in Clinton on June 20,2012. Judy was born on June 18, 1920 to Frederick and Edna Koehler and was a lifelong resident of Essex. She was a graduate of Pratt High School and worked for Verplex for more than twenty years and then at E.E. Dickinson until retirement. Judy was also a lifelong member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Essex where she actively volunteered for various activities throughout her life. As a member of Pettipaug Yacht Club during its early years, Judy was an active crew for her father in sailboat racing in Essex. She actively gardened and enjoyed fishing and crabbing with her grandchildren and again with her first great grandchild after she had reached 90. Judy's historical knowledge of Essex was a treasure trove, and her love of Essex and especially of the beautiful pastoral lane on which she lived was well known. Upon her retirement Judy was responsible for clearing and planting a small town park at the top of Rackett and Benson Lanes which had been the location of the schoolhouse her father had attended. Although she reluctantly gave up her riding mower a few years ago, Judy insisted on using her self-propelled mower to cut her own lawn until she was 91. Judy was known for her walks from her house downtown to and around Essex Village, sometimes twice a day. Judy is survived by her son Jeffrey Going and his wife Marlene; grandson Christopher Going and his wife Dayna and two great grandsons, Jamison and Mason Going; and her grandson Sean Going. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Thaddeus Ozimek and two brothers, Phillip and Ralf Koehler. Funeral services will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, Main Street, Essex on Saturday, June 29th at 11am. Burial will be private at Cypress Cemetery in Old Saybrook. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St John's Episcopal Church/Local Outreach, Box 422, Essex, CT 06426 or to the Disabled American Veterans.
